Why are we worrying now? When it actually gets released in Japanese, wouldn't it be easier to figure it out? Proposing a change from "tracks" to "locus"

I've been meaning to bring this up since the game was first announced, but I never got around to typing up my reasoning. I realize it'll be difficult to change others' opinions now, with everyone having gotten used to the title "Tracks of Light," but I might as well try.

I propose that we use the translation of the title "Locus of Light," rather than "Tracks of Light." While it's true that the word used in the title, 軌跡, can be translated as "wagon tracks," that really doesn't seem to fit the premise of the game so much. As stated in the Wikipedia article for the term, however:

軌跡 (kiseki, locus) are wheel tracks left behind by an automobile or the like. It can also be taken to indicate a pioneering action, or emotional growth.

See Locus (mathematics)

The word "tracks" doesn't really carry the same meaning. On the other hand, "locus" can have different meanings:

  • Locus of control, psychological term referring to "a person's belief about what causes the good or bad results in his life"
  • Locus, a mathematical term referring to a collection of points, "typically applied to a condition which defines... a curve"

Also, "Locus of Light" just plain sounds cooler.

Therefore, I think the title "Locus of Light" would work better than "Tracks of Light." 梅子 06:03, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

I agree with this reasoning. TTEchidna 06:05, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
If you want to be more simpler you could just say locus can be defined as "a center or source, as of activities or power"[1]. So it's basically Locus (Loci?) of Light => "source of light". ~ solaris 06:11, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
...yes. There is that too. Thank you, Sol. 梅子 06:15, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Support

Oppose

  • Oppose change to "Locus", however would support change to "Path", as Path has been appearing in the media, including IGN. TheChrisD RantsEdits 20:39, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose on the grounds that the title seems to be drawing attention to the feature of drawing a pattern to summon a Pokémon. Whether or not this is a "Locus" as a curve or a "Track" as a symbol hasn't been (to me) sufficiently proven. On a side note, the English Title will likely differ, so I don't see much of an issue with using this literal translation of the title until the game is announced for North America.--Purimpopoie 20:51, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
