Now head back up to Viridian City and, what the heck, why not train a bit more? Try to get to level ten for now. Once back in the City, head to the Poké Mart and buy 5 Poké Balls. Now head north and you'll notice that the old man blocking the road before has now "had his coffee" and "feels great!" If you tell him that you're not in a hurry, he will show you how to capture a Pokémon. Head back south to the nearest patch of tall grass and catch a Pidgey and a Rattata. This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Red and Blue. This walkthrough follows the original Game Boy version, not Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. The guide for those can be found here.

Encountering a wild Rattata

There are only two wild Pokémon that can possibly be encountered on Route 1: Pidgey and Rattata. Walk in the tall grass and you will encounter them. Train against both of them by fighting them and gaining experience. If the Pokémon is almost out of HP, return to Pallet Town and talk to Mom, or head on to Viridian City and use the Pokémon Center. You should have trained to get a level of at least 8 by the time you get to Viridian City. This boring training will pay off, as it will make it easier to fight trainers later.

Here's how to heal your Pokémon

Now you can explore Viridian City. There are not many things you can do yet. As soon as you go into the city, you should see a Pokémon Center. This is a place where you can heal your Pokémon back to perfection. Using a Pokémon Center is simple. Just walk up to the woman at the counter and press A. She'll ask you if you want your Pokémon healed. Just select: HEAL. At the east side of the Pokémon Center, you can use the PC to store Pokémon and items. There are three people in this Pokémon Center, none of whom do anything worth while, besides give you tips.

If you go far to the north, there will be an old man laying down and a girl standing next to him. If you try to pass, he will tell you you can't. There's nothing of interest in the house to the east of them, just a man and his daughter who don't do anything important. To the south of that house is a Pokémon Trainers School which has only one student. She is reading a notebook that you can read too. It gives some tips about how to play the game. Southeast of the School is a Poké Mart. You need to enter here to move on.

The man at the counter gives you an Parcel to give to Professor Oak

When you enter the Poké Mart, immediatly the man at the counter asks you if you're from Pallet Town. He then tells you to deliver a package to Professor Oak. This package doesn't do anything for you, so you just have to deliver it. He won't let you buy anything from the Mart either, until you deliver the Parcel. And so, you have to head on back to Pallet Town.

Upon delivering the Parcel to Professor Oak, your rival returns to the lab. He then gives both of you Pokédexes, which you will use to record the data of (hopefully) every Pokémon in existence! Apparently, this was Professor Oak's quest before he got really old. After recieving the Pokédex, your rival will jeer that he doesn't need you to complete his Pokédex and that he'll get a Town Map from his sister and ask her not to give you one. Despite his clever plan, you can just head on over to his house and his sister will give you one anyway.
