After being swept up by the tornado of sand that was made by Hippowdon, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, and Dr. Footstep are thrown far away. Pearl and Dr. Footstep land by the edge of a massive lake. Pearl tries to call for his friends, but realizes that he has been separated from them. He drags off Dr. Footstep to go look for them.

Diamond and Platinum find themselves on a different side of the lake. As they walk to find the others, Diamond recalls a memory from when he was four years old. In the memory, two stand-up comedians perform a show for all of the students at Diamond's elementary school. A young Diamond and Pearl laugh as the comedians joke about a Red Gyarados in the Lake of Rage. Inspired by the performance, the two children go to Lake Verity, but are separated. Lost while trying to find Pearl, Diamond sees a bright light flicker from an island in the middle of the lake. He passes out shortly after, and is found by Pearl and his dad. Back in the present, Diamond reveals to Platinum that he never told Pearl about what he saw.

Pearl waits impatiently as Dr. Footstep insists on viewing the footprints of a Staravia. He determines there must be a Staraptor nearby, a Pokémon he has been longing to collect the footprints of. When he sees one flying overhead, he sets a sheet of sticky paper on the ground and then calls it down.

The Staraptor slowly approaches Dr. Footstep, then grabs him in its talons. Pearl and Chimler grab onto him to pull him back down, but their combined strength is not enough. The three of them are lifted into the air by the Staraptor. By reading its footprints, Dr. Footstep determines that Staraptor intends to drop them from the sky.

From where they are walking, Diamond and Platinum hear Pearl's voice and figure that he is close by. Before they can continue looking, two Scientists and their Pokémon appear in front of them. They tell them that entering Lake Valor is prohibited, and attempt to take them in for questioning. The Scientists then reveal that their orders have been given to them by Cyrus. As they prepare to battle, Diamond steps in front of Platinum to shield her.
