:::I have yet to see a Mystery Egg report in which the affected user specifically states that they received the Mystery Egg via Wonder Trade. In fact, one of the more notable reports states that Mystery Eggs cannot be traded or released, akin to Bad Eggs.
:::Now, if I may speculate a bit,... The main article asks about the appearance of a "Mystery Zone" reference, and quite a few people think that the Eggs themselves are "contagious" and are responsible for the multiplication.
:::"Mystery Egg" appears to be (the product of) an error handler for invalid Pokemon data, in much the same way that Generation I's "MISSINGNO." name was (the product of) an error handler for Pokemon species that had zero-length names. The "Mystery Egg" error handler exists in order to handle invalid Pokemon data -- to supply various parts of the game engine with valid data, so that things don't break.
:::Accordingly, it seems reasonable to assume that Mystery Eggs can never hatch, or that they will simply hatch into other Mystery Eggs (akin to Species 253 in Generation II). If they are intended as error handlers and safe wrappers for invalid data, then why would they hatch into anything else?
:::Mystery Eggs appear to have been acquired from the "Mystery Zone" on "0/0/2000". This is likely because the relevant data is either null (zero), or is being treated as null by the "Mystery Egg" event handler. "Mystery Zone" is yet another error handler: a placeholder name given to maps and locations that don't have their own names. You could therefore read the Egg's origin as: "obtained from nowhere on never."
:::So if Mystery Eggs are simply safe wrappers for invalid data, then why would they multiply? Well, on a stable and undamaged copy of the game, they wouldn't. The most likely explanation is that some individuals have damaged copies of Pokemon X and Y that are creating invalid Pokemon in the PC, likely by mistaking empty PC slots for filled ones. The parts of the game that are still functioning properly catch the resulting invalid Pokemon and handle them as Mystery Eggs.

I added some trivia for the D/P Bad EGGs. See if you have anything to change or add. LordArceus 19:16, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Expansion

I would consider adding the following text to this article, but I do not know if it fits the style of Bulbapedia since I am a relatively inexperienced user.

"Another method of obtaining a bad egg involves using the gameshark code for walking through walls to enter the Colosseum without linking up. There, you will fight the last trainer you battled, and after the battle, the Pokémon you used will become a bad egg. However, this bad egg has been known to corrupt the game save file, forcing the player to start the game over again."

If this text does not work, please feel free to modify and add it. DarkMazer 07:23, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Manual of style. Don't use "you", capitalize GameShark correctly, and it should be good. And by "don't use you", I mean instead find a way around doing so, such as substituting "the player" or using the passive tense. --TTEchidna 09:29, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

PBR Bad Egg

So, is it true that bad eggs are also in PBR?GreenAiden555 05:25, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Yes, surprisingly the game actually uses an unused model for an egg. --Chickasaurus 21:46, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Ruby/Sapphire Bad Egg info

I can't remember how I got it, but a few years ago, I had a Pokémon in my party that had 0 hp, was labeled Bad EGG, and had a yellow bulbasaur as its im-party sprite. I believe I was trying to catch a Jirachi or something, I can't remember. Crüsäder 19:00, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

I also got a Bad EGG in my Sapphire. I got it in the Day Care, when the old man gave me an Egg, it contains Bad EGG.

Deleting Bad Eggs

I don't know if it's possible in other versions, but the Emerald cloning trick can be used to delete Bad Eggs.

1. Go to the PC in the Battle Tower. 2. Withdraw Bad Egg(s) into your party. 3. Save the game. 4. Deposit the Bad Eggs, and ONLY the Bad Eggs, into an empty PC box. 5. Go to the receptionist closest to the PC. Start signing up until she asks you if you want to save. Say yes and wait until after the pause, when the 'real' save confirmation screen appears. Don't save---instead reset and reload the game. You will end up standing in front of the receptionist, with the Bad Eggs (and any other Pokemon) deposited into the PC after the initial save deleted. SlashFirestorm 04:04, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

I've gotten Bad EGGS with no sprite or picture, who can simply be deleted by selecting the eggs in mass. When you drop the eggs, they all disappear. The Blackened Halls 15:02, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Mentioned

When i used my action replay to catch cynthia's milotic, it got very glitchy and said "bad EGG has been sent to box 1 in bebe's PC". I looked in my box and it was a normal milotic. maybe it is worth mentioning?

Catching other Trainers' Pokémon can yield three results concerning that: 1) The game will initially call the Pokémon "Bad EGG" until you nickname it (or don't nickname it - either way), 2) The game will call the Pokémon whatever Pokémon the Trainer you fought sent out first (in Cynthia's case, Spiritomb) until you nickname it(or don't), 3) The game will call the Pokémon by its proper name. As to whether or not you should add that, I don't think so...it isn't really a Bad EGG. LordArceus 19:20, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

PBR Bad Eggs

The only way I've managed to produce a bad egg in PBR, was an illegal EV set. Now, I also hacked a Pokémon with the following specifics:

That Ninjask was uploaded to PBR without a problem. I've even used it in a Colosseum, despite how lame it was to use it. Now, I seriously doubt a Ninjask is compatible with that move-set. Not to mention, if an illegal ability gave a Bad Egg - it'd have failed straight away. Ninjask can only have Speed Boost. Need proof of the Ninjask? Just ask. Gywall(Talk) 12:06, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

That occurs when a Pokemon with over 510 EVs total and/or over 255 EVs in one stat is copied into PBR. It cannot be used in battle. I've experimented, and every Pokemon I hacked, no matter what its coloration, moves, ability, OT, or ID was, was able to be used in PBR, as long as its EVs were legit.--Celebi96 13:58, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Trainer ID?

I've got a Action Replay for GBA. I loaned it to my friend, and he got two level 100 shiny Celebis from it and migrated to D/P. But when he put them on PBR they were Bad Eggs. I know hacked Pokémon sometimes appear as Bad Eggs in PBR, but I was wondering if it might be the Trainer ID, which was 000000. It could, of course, be the stats. All the stats except Hp were 299, and HP was 404, but my friend said that's normal for a level 100 Celebi. Could it be the Trainer ID? ZanderX 08:10, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

diamond freeze

Sometimes when my sister incorrectly uses the OHKO cheat and battles a BadEGG (even in single battles, it just dosen't say "BadEGG"), the music slows down and the game freezes. Can someone else test this to see if it's just the action replay/cart? Arceus is the Best 17:49, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Box Breeding?

A few days ago i got two bad EGGS in one of my boxes. While i have not been able to figure out exactly why, i have one theory. In my game i am trying to breed a bunch of Pokémon so i get them at just the right nature (see my user page). When i left two breedible Pokémon right next to each other, a bad egg appeared next to them. The two kinds were a pair of Victorybells and a pair of Blastioses (both pairs contained a ♂ and ♀). I have been trying to hatch them for some time now, but with no luck. Has anyone else encountered this? I am going to run a few more tests to see if maybe bad eggs also appear from leaving eggs in a PC for too long or just randomly appear. Thanks.--Blaziken=Tahu 20:54, 5 February 2009 (UTC)#

More

In Generation IV,The Action Replay code "Instant Egg In Daycare" will give you a Bad EGG of some sort,(ONLY IF THERE IS NO POKEMON IN DAYCARE) as it doesn't appear in your party, and still takes up a slot. It can't be deposited into a PC, but still counts as a Pokémon. It can be the only member of your party, but when you go to check your party the game freezes. On the Day Care checker Pokétech app the egg doesn't bob up and down, but just stays still. When hatched, it becomes a glitchy square with what sounds like Bulbasaur's cry. The game freezes when you enter a battle with only this in your party. If you save, YOU ARE SCREWED. HOPE THIS HELPS! Team Hyper 16:11, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Another removal trick in Emerald

I have discovered another way to delete Bad Eggs in Emerald. It requires a Gameshark/Action Replay:

1. Equip a code to let you warp to a location (any warp code will do, though a town/city is preferable so you don't get stuck somewhere)

2. Place the Bad Eggs and a single "throwaway" Pokémon in your party (this Pokémon will also be deleted, so use something like a Magikarp). These should be the ONLY Pokémon in your party.

3. Enter the Battle Factory challenge with this party.

4. After you have chosen the 3 rental Pokémon, when you are about to enter the door to the battle area, turn on the warp code.

5. When you walk through the door, you will end up in whatever area the code takes you to.

6. Check your party. The Bad Eggs and the "throwaway" Pokémon will have been overwritten with the rental Pokémon you chose at the Battle Factory. As a "bonus", you get to keep these Pokémon!

Hope that helps anyone... ~DarkStorm 20:49, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Glitch

I have encountered a very, very bizarre glitch in my Emerald. It seems that my Zigzagoon in my PC has turned into a Bad Egg! There's a blank spot in the place where it was, and when I select it, the game says " is selected." Then there's some options like Summary, Withdraw etc... when I withdraw it, it appears invisible in my party(no yellow bulbasaur-icon), and when I view it's stats, the game freezes. I still can see the info box saying "It looks like this egg will take a long time to hatch." It's name is Bad EGG, it's type is ???, and it was obtained from the Daycare Couple. o_O I can release it just like a normal pokemon without any negative effects. So, can anyone tell me why my Zigzagoon turned into a bad egg? I didn't hack my Zigzagoon, just deposited it to my PC, and a few days after I deposited it, I went to withdraw it, and there was a bad egg in it's place. EDIT: Oh, and Zigzagoon seemed to have vanished completely from the PC. EDITEDIT: And now my game says that I haven't caught a Zigzagoon at all. o.O

Move to Bad EGG

I suggest this article be moved to Bad EGG to reflect the proper casing used in game. Discuss please?--SnorlaxMonster 06:58, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

I object... because I know Sir Echidna-In-Chief said somewhere that when something's in all-caps in the GBA games (I know it's in IV too though, but Pokémon names in IV are also uppercase still), it's usually meant to be lowercase. So no. It'd be kind of like having the characters and items exclusive to not-IV at uppercase titles. So what if the "Bad" isn't capitalized either? I believe it'd be an adjective or something in this sense, not a part of its name. ...Am I making any sense here? D: ▫▪Ťïňắ 17:00, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
Hmm, I see. However, "Bad Egg" would still be better than "Bad egg" then. --SnorlaxMonster 06:17, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
I agree that the spelling should be "Bad Egg" just looks better imo.insomniac 10:52, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
Well, my logic was that things written in ALL CAPS were proper nouns and thus it should be capitalized, not because it looks better. --SnorlaxMonster 11:36, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
Hmm. "Bad Egg" would be good. Thinking about it, the only things I can think of in ALLCAPS were proper nouns (names, 'Gym Leader', 'Pokémon Trainer', etc)... is it capitalized like that in IV, though? I'm just curious since all the screenshots I've seen are in III... ▫▪Ťïňắ 15:59, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
I have no idea. Oh well, it's the User's choice... User:Sporeo45 04:11:9 26 February 2010 (UTC)
In Generation III, it is referred to as "Bad EGG". In Generation IV, the game instead calls it "Bad Egg" --Chickasaurus 14:49, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
OK, so move to Bad Egg then? --SnorlaxMonster 02:28, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, or just don't. OwnageMuch 04:19, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

Bad EGG in battle

I've managed to get a Bad EGG in battle in FireRed.
Bad EGGs can fight in battle, given the right conditions. I had replaced both my rival's starter and my starter right before the first battle.
Here is a picture:
Bad EGG in battle.png
-Mew151 21:12, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

What do the moves do? What is the cry heard? --SnorlaxMonster 03:33, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
The cry is just a bulbasaur cry. The Poké ball that it is released from is random. Usually I find a premier ball or luxury ball, but that might be something to do with the code I made. The game just resets when I select a move, though once a move did damage, with a glitchy battle animation. Mew151 00:37, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
It would be better to force one to battle with the Pomeg glitch and try it that way. --SnorlaxMonster 12:41, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
I've also done this. Except, my Bad EGG just used struggle. Note that I did not cheat to hatch it or battle with it, however hatching one took approximately 7-10 hours of my running to hatch. The Blackened Halls 15:00, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Gen III Bad Eggs and Disappearing Pokémon

I have had several of my pokémon on my FireRed Version go "missing," including my level 80 Vaporeon. Instead of my Pokémon being in my box, bad eggs have appeared in their place. Is there a way to hatch these eggs at all or am I forever doomed and lost my prized Vaporeon forever? How can I make sure this never happens again? I have never hacked or cheated on my game. I have only traded Pokemon over from Ruby and Sapphire that I leveled up using a Rare Candy cheat from an Action Replay, but that shouldn't affect the my FireRed version right? --Blaziken=Tahu 02:48, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Did you save? If you haven't, don't. CuboneKing 02:51, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

I had this happen to me. You'll also notice if you move the bad egg out of that particular slot in that box, every time you go out and back into the box there ill be another bad egg there with no icon. There seems to be no way to stop it but to not use that position in that box. OwnageMuch 05:38, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Pokemon FireRed BadEGGs

for some odd reason, when i tried to use a ciro pokemon maker code, my boxes became unaccessible, i tried everything to clear out my boxes, but it just wont work, anyone have anyway to completely redo the boxes like as if there were never any Pokémon in there in the first place? ArkAngel X 10:19, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

This is the kind of question you ask on the forums. It doesn't help improve the article itself. --SnorlaxMonster 12:39, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Pokemon Soul Silver Bad Egg Glitch

How ironic, that I begin to read up on the bad egg glitch and it happens randomly to me! I was walking in the grass by the daycare, when I encountered an abra called Bad Egg. Its HP is gone. My eevee is also called Bad Egg, and it is showing hitpoints 349/35. On the Fight option, there is an egg icon slowly bouncing up and down, like it has status problems (or, aha! -- low hp). My eevee is also bouncing up and down rapidly, along with its status bar. This happened very shortly after my sentret (level 3) got infected with the pokerus (which happened randomly, and was not induced by cheating). What is the cause of this? What do I do?--Nyx Wolfe 03:17, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

So this game has never used cheats? What kind of glitches had it performed, if any? Was the game bought second hand, or brand new (unopened)? --SnorlaxMonster 01:21, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
You said the Pokérus wasn't induced by cheating, however had you cheated on your game at all? OwnageMuch 20:25, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
I got a Bad EGG when I was around the 3rd gym in Soulsilver, making 3 of my pokemon bad EGGs for no apparent reason, including my Bayleef. I didn't encounter one, I just went to use an HM and there they were. I just kept turning the game on and off until they were all gone. Gliscorguy54 18:47, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
Can you give more detail, like what the Pokémon were, if you had cheated, if the game was bought second hand? --SnorlaxMonster 02:28, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Would it be possible to

collect every single shiny sprite like 900MS.png? We could add them to articles or something. Abcboy 16:16, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

There aren't shiny sprites, it's a glitch. OwnageMuch 23:55, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

Still, would it be possible to collect them somewhere? Also, you might consider using a different example sprite than Bulbasaur's - with this and the Invisible Shiny Bulbasaur being a glitch in the same game, it makes it look like 900MS.png is a shiny Bulbasaur sprite. Yamiidenryuu 04:06, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

There aren't Shiny menu sprites for Pokémon. This is the only one, and it isn't actually used for Shiny Bulbasaur. It would appear to be the default menu sprite, which is why these glitches use it. --SnorlaxMonster 04:55, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry to reply to this again after so long, but I'm a bit confused now - The article states that "A Bad Egg placed in the first slot of the party will, rather than having a normal Egg menu sprite, have a differently colored version of the menu sprite of the Pokémon following it, such as a golden Bulbasaur, a blue Marowak, or a brown Ho-Oh", which implies that there's an alternate-palette sprite for each species, but you've just stated there's only the one for Bulbasaur. Which is true? I'm not interested in collecting every single icon for the wiki, but if you're right, then the article needs to be fixed. Yamiidenryuu 23:42, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

I believe the golden Bulbasaur is actually stored in the data at index number 9000 decimal (either that or someone chose an arbitrary filename). It is possible it uses an alternate pallet of other Pokémon menusprites, but I doubt it, and have never seen them anywhere. --SnorlaxMonster 15:22, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Eggnite the Light of Change!

Excuse the title, but should this page be moved to Bad Egg or even Bad EGG? --Landfish7 22:04, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

In Generation IV it's just "Bad Egg", so it would not be moved to "Bad EGG". However, I think it should be moved to "Bad Egg". --SnorlaxMonster 07:45, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

From original Bad Egg redirect talk page

Can this please be deleted in order to move Bad egg to Bad Egg. Or could we switch the codes of Bad Egg with Bad egg and Talk:Bad Egg with Talk:Bad egg so that Bad egg redirects to Bad Egg? Boy is that confusing. --Landfish7 15:53, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Wake-Up Slap

I remember using the one hit kill cheat on my Action Replay, the one you shouldn't use in Double Battles, in a Double Battle. Normally nothing strange like this pops up, but there was an invisible bad egg that was there near the end of the turn that used Wake-Up Slap to KO itself (Can't remember if it froze the game after the battle though). Can anyone else confirm this? Shiramu Kuromu 21:26, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

Probably coz Action Replay does weird stuff. Bulbapedia doesn't cover glitches caused by tampering with the hardware. —darklordtrom 05:14, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

Bad Egg questions

Since Bad Eggs are caused by a checksum not matching, could this be a referemce to the phrase 'bad egg?' Also, Can bad eggs be obtained in black and white? Or no? Flamingcanine 01:03, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

Random

How do you know wild eggs used in Pokemon modifier hatch into random Pokemon? I get a game freeze. --I hide in the dark! 01:48, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

No freeze IV game

Hey, I was wondering if this is true

"The use of an Action Replay with a "1 hit kill" cheat in double battles will often result in a Bad Egg appearing. If the player sees a Bad Egg, the game will occasionally freeze."

I have done that in double battles, I have seen the Bad Egg, however, my game, every time I do that, I never attack it, and it says "If the player sees a Bad Egg, the game will occasionally freeze." However, everytime I have spotted it in my game, I have not encountered a single freeze when seeing the bad egg as an opponent. And I have a good memory(otherwise I'd remember me raging, and I certainly don't remember that)

Soo, is this luck or what? I haven't had a single freeze when seeing Bad Egg, and I do have that code(1 hit kill). I have initiated that before on double battles, but no freeze. Clarification? Pinkolol16 11:12, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Gen V

So a while back I traded my Registeel for this thing called "ダメタマゴ" Is this a bad egg? It says that is Japanese for bad egg. Is this just a hack, or an actual bad egg? Mcplayer12345 01:21, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

I think it might be, at least it has the word "egg" in it, but I'm not exactly sure...--Ondelez46regigigas (talk) 01:31, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
"Dame Tamago", quite literally "Bad Egg". If it's an egg, it's certainly a Bad Egg. OwnageMuch (talk) 23:27, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

Bad Eggs in Gen V

Another way I know you can get Bad Eggs in Gen V is by downloading a black/white Kyurem onto the games. For Black/White it creates an illegal Kyurem (not sure if you get a Bad Egg) and on Black 2/White 2 if you try to defuse it you will get a Bad Egg. I think this is because of the fact that you can only get one Kyurem forme per game, and you can't trade them at all. --Ondelez46regigigas (talk) 01:31, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

Gen VI

Bad Eggs have returned in Gen VI. In this YouTube video posted a day after X and Y's release, a player reported to have encountered a couple on his game.

By Bishopped
This video is not available on Bulbapedia; instead, you can watch the video on YouTube here.

And according to a thread on the forums, some were received from Wonder Trade. The source said that the eggs will multiply in the player's PC boxes, corrupting the player's file. This should be investigated and possibly noted. Berrenta (talk) 02:07, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

It's already noted on List of glitches in Generation VI; I'll just copypasta it from there. Incidentally, the reports of corrupting, multiplying Wonder Trade bad eggs seem to be greatly exaggerated and completely unsubstantiated, so those I wouldn't mention. Yamiidenryuu (talk) 02:58, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, that's my guess as well. Wanted to make sure, so I posted here. Anyways, thanks for the reply. Take care! Berrenta (talk) 03:07, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
I have yet to see a Mystery Egg report in which the affected user specifically states that they received the Mystery Egg via Wonder Trade. In fact, one of the more notable reports states that Mystery Eggs cannot be traded or released, akin to Bad Eggs.
Now, if I may speculate a bit,... The main article asks about the appearance of a "Mystery Zone" reference, and quite a few people think that the Eggs themselves are "contagious" and are responsible for the multiplication.

The "Mystery Egg" error handler exists in order to handle invalid Pokemon data -- to supply various parts of the game engine with valid data, so that things don't break.
Accordingly, it seems reasonable to assume that Mystery Eggs can never hatch, or that they will simply hatch into other Mystery Eggs (akin to Species 253 in Generation II). If they are intended as error handlers and safe wrappers for invalid data, then why would they hatch into anything else?
Mystery Eggs appear to have been acquired from the "Mystery Zone" on "0/0/2000". This is likely because the relevant data is either null (zero), or is being treated as null by the "Mystery Egg" event handler.
