From September 28, 2008 to November 4, 2008 and from January 16 to March 2, 2009, players of the Japanese version of Pokémon Platinum could download the Secret Key over the {{wp|Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection}}. It can be given to five other players of Platinum.

The Secret Key was featured in ''[[PS430|Unplugging Rotom (Heat, Wash, Mow, Fan, Frost)]]'', where it was found by {{adv|Diamond}} at the [[Old Chateau]] after his and {{adv|Pearl}}'s second encounter with {{TP|Diamond|Rotom}}. As the word "Eterna" was written into the key, they deduced that it must fit into something found in [[Eterna City]]. It can also be obtained in North America over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection from April 20 to May12.

The Secret Key (Japanese: ひみつのカギ Secret Key) is an Key Item. It is shaped like Rotom's head, with the outline of its eyes and mouth visible under the coat of Rotom-orange plastic. The key's teeth look like the prongs of an electrical plug.

The Secret Key was featured in Unplugging Rotom (Heat, Wash, Mow, Fan, Frost), where it was found by Diamond at the Old Chateau after his and Pearl's second encounter with Rotom. As the word "Eterna" was written into the key, they deduced that it must fit into something found in Eterna City. Following Rotom into the Team Galactic Eterna Building, they soon found a room labeled "Secret Room", and used the key to unlock its door, revealing that the room contained all of Rotom's electric appliances, giving it access to all of its forms.
