As well as producing unique or variant cards available at events, Nintendo has also released several varieties of promotional items in which to deliver special cards. Such mediums include value packs, boxed sets and collector tins. The list below focuses on collector tins, each of which contain a promotional card and booster packs from recent Expansions. The items are listed in (roughly) chronological order and contain details of their contents.

EX Series Collector's Tin

The EX Series Collector's Tin was released in November 2003 and was the first collector's tin to be released by Nintendo. As the general collector's tin, with a window display and hexagonal design, did not debut until 2006, this collector's tin instead was rectangular and lacked a window.

EX Deck Tins

Released in October 2004, the EX Deck Tins are designed to comfortably hold a deck of cards and accessories. They come in four varieties, their designs based on the Japanese Booster pack art from EX Sandstorm, EX Dragon, EX Team Magma vs. Team Aqua and EX FireRed & LeafGreen. The tins include one random promotional card out of a possible four and other accessories. Their success would lead to the subsequent release of the collector tins we are accustomed to today.

Promo cards:

  • Treecko (Nintendo Promo 16)
  • Torchic (Nintendo Promo 17)
  • Mudkip (Nintendo Promo 18)
  • Whismur (Nintendo Promo 19)

Contents:

  • Random EX Series Booster pack (x2)
  • Sticker sheet matching the design of the tin (x1)

EX Collector's Carry Tin

Released in 2005, the Collector’s Carry Tin is a unique item amongst Nintendo’s promotional items. It features a carry handle, a latch and is the largest tin to be released to date. The same tin was used for the Japanese Deoxys vs Rayquaza Gift Set in 2004. The tin art features a battle between Deoxys and Rayquaza, as depicted in Destiny Deoxys.

Promo cards:

  • Celebi (Nintendo Promo 29)
  • Suicune (Nintendo Promo 30)

Contents:

  • Random EX Series Booster pack (x3)

EX Collector's Tin #2

Following the success of their previous collector tins and responding to the feedback from the community, Nintendo released the first wave of new “window tins”, in which people could see the promotional card included. The tins feature Japanese art from various sets along the side.

Promo cards:

  • Moltres ex (Nintendo Promo 31)
  • Articuno ex (Nintendo Promo 32)
  • Zapdos ex (Nintendo Promo 33)

EX Collector's Tin #3

These were the first tins to have specifically designed lids to distinguish between each other (the designs also match the card available in the tin). They were also the first to be released under the schedule in which the tins become available now: spring and holiday (autumn), these being the 2006 holiday collector tins.

Promo cards:

  • Kyogre ex (Nintendo Promo 37)
  • Groudon ex (Nintendo Promo 38)
  • Rayquaza ex (Nintendo Promo 39)

US exclusive Collector Tins
EU exclusive Collector Tins

Also known as the 2007 Spring Collector's Tins, these are unusual as the tin designs do not match any of the promotional cards included (with the exception of Tyranitar in the UK and Europe), and the promotional cards differ depending on the country the tins were available in.

Known as the Diamond & Pearl Collector's Tins. For a time, preliminary images of these were displayed as including a regular Torterra, Infernape and Empoleon, all found within the Diamond & Pearl Expansion set and its theme decks. Nearer their release, however, it was found that they included their Pokémon LV.X variants with promotional artwork instead.

DP Collector's Tins #4

Instead of releasing three holiday tins, in 2008, The Pokémon Company released two waves of two tins each, thus releasing four holiday tins instead of three.

Wave 1

The first wave, called the Diamond & Pearl Holiday 2008 Collector's Tins Wave 1, was released on September 17, 2008. These tins include promotional variants, with artwork not released in Japan at the time, of the Mewtwo LV.X and Rhyperior LV.X cards released in Legends Awakened.
