(Japanese: '''大晦日だよ！　ポケットモンスターアンコール''' ''It's New Year's Eve! {{tt|Pocket Monsters|Pokémon}} Encore'') is believed by some to have been intended to be the 40th episode of the [[Pokémon anime]], despite airing in a different timeslot to usual, being an hour long, using kanji characters in the title, and using the title 'Encore'. It was set to air in Japan on December 31, 1997. It is confirmed in the list of the episodes' production numbers given in the booklet with the ''[[M01|Mewtwo's Counterattack]]'' Laserdisc release, as well as episode numbers visible on scripts, that it was not initially intended to be EP040. During the rescheduling following the [[EP038]] incident, it was canceled entirely. Like other episodes given the 'Encore' title, it would not have had any new footage, but instead be repeat previous footage. It was also subsequently skipped in all broadcasts in other languages, and has never aired. No trailer for this episode has ever been seen, nor is any further information known apart from its Japanese title.

==Trivia==
* This was the first episode of the Pokémon anime to not air even once, and the only skipped episode of which no footage whatsoever has been seen by audiences, assuming that there was any original footage at all.
* It was set to air on a Wednesday morning instead of a Tuesday evening like the other episodes and run for about an hour.
* A similarly titled (お正月だよ！ポケットモンスタースペシャル！''It's the New Year! {{tt|Pocket Monsters|Pokémon}} Special'') 2-hour special aired on January 1, 1999, recapping events of the anime until [[EP077]].
