Release information

This card was originally released in the Base Set as a Trainer card with artwork by Keiji Kinebuchi. This print was later included in the English Base Set 2 and Legendary Collection reprint sets, as well as the Nivi City Gym, Tamamushi City Gym, and Yamabuki City Gym theme decks in Japan. It was later reclassified in the Black & White expansion as an Item card with new artwork by Kent Kanetsuna, originating in the Beginning Set and Black Collection. It was later printed again in Beginning Set + and Beginning Set Pikachu Version rereleases of the original Black & White Beginning Set. Another English print was included in the Plasma Blast expansion, first originating from the Japanese Blastoise + Kyurem-EX Combo Deck.

Energy Retrieval was again reprinted with new artwork by 5ban Graphics as one of the XY-P Promotional cards and was released within the Xerneas • Yveltal Card Box on December 13, 2013.
