For the coins used in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, see Coin (TCG).

A coin (Japanese: コイン coin) is a type of currency used in the Pokémon games. Coins are used to play slot machines, card flip (in Generation II), or roulette (in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald) at the Game Corners, and can also be redeemed for prizes, such as items, TMs, or Pokémon. A Coin Case is required to store these coins.

Coins can be bought in amounts of 50 for $1000 or, starting in Generation II, in increments of 500 for $10000. They can also be found in game machines in the European versions of Platinum, which replaces the slot machines with game machines.

Dropped coins can be found on the floor of the Game Corner in certain games and can be collected by the player. In most cases, dozens of coins are found just by searching the floor. Several people may give the player free coins, normally 10 or 20. This is useful if the player wishes to start playing without having to buy any coins.

Trivia

  • Using a Gameshark on a Generation I game, it's possible to obtain single coins for $10 each. This may have been a possible alternative to buying coins at places other than the Game Corner, but was scrapped in the final cut of the Generation I games. It might have been a method for product testers at Gamefreak to buy coins more quickly than the lengthy process to buy coins 50 at a time to test if they would be properly exchanged at the game corner. (Note that this cost is only half the cost of getting 50 coins for $1000.)
