amiibo (Japanese: アミーボ amiibo) are a line of interactive figures by Nintendo. Each amiibo figure contains an NFC chip in its base, which allows it to interact with multiple games on both the Wii U and New Nintendo 3DS consoles using near field communication.

Several Pokémon characters have been announced or released as part of the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U line. These figures are intended for use with the eponymous game, which allows each figure to store a matching AI-controlled character that can be powered up and fought with/against in numerous game modes. They also unlock Pokémon-themed sprite skins for Mario in Super Mario Maker, although unlike other amiibo skins, they use the default Super Mario Bros. sounds instead of new, Pokémon-themed ones. Pikachu was released as part of the initial wave in November 21, 2014, while Lucario was made available in February 2015. Charizard, Jigglypuff and Greninja were released on May 29, 2015, with Charizard getting a slightly earlier release in Japan and Europe in late April. Mewtwo was released in Europe on October 23, 2015, in Australia and New Zealand on October 24, 2015 and will be released in the US on November 13, 2015.

Currently, all released Pokémon amiibo are compatible with Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, Hyrule Warriors, Mario Party 10, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Super Mario Maker. Game data from both Super Smash Bros. games can be saved onto these amiibo, although one amiibo can only hold save data for one game at a time.

An NFC reader/writer was released in October 2015 that can scan amiibo, allowing the Nintendo 3DS and 2DS to communicate with amiibo.[1]
