ElementalTypes
ElementalTypes
The ??? type (Japanese: <span lang="ja">???タイプ</span> ??? type), unlike the Bird, is an elemental type which existed as a non-glitch type from Generation II onward. However, no Pokémon bears this type. Pokémon eggs are typed solely with this before they hatch, and by extension, bad eggs are also of the ???-type.
The ???-type (Japanese: <span lang="ja">???タイプ</span> ??? type) was an elemental type which existed from Generation II until Generation IV.

Weaknesses and resistances
Characteristics
The ??? type has neither any weaknesses nor resistances: all damaging moves do regular damage to a Pokémon of the ??? type, and any damaging move hacked to be of the ??? type will do regular damage against all Pokémon.
The ???-type was the oddity among the types. Unlike the Bird and other glitch types, the ???-type did not exist in the coding of Generation I: it, along with the Dark- and Steels, was introduced in Generation II, though unlike its counterparts, it did not have as much fanfare. The ???-type existed solely to be the type of Pokémon eggs and the move Curse, a strange move which changed effect depending on whether or not it was used by a Ghost Pokémon.

???-type Pokémon
Unlike other types, the ???-type was not programmed to have weaknesses or resistances: it was effectively neutral. Due to this, however, issues arise if damaging moves are hacked to be of this type in the Generation II and Generation III games: since it was considered neither a physical type nor a special type, the damage dealt by a ??? move is minimal, even if the move has 255 power, the highest possible.
No Pokémon are ???-type; however, both eggs and bad eggs are given this type until they hatch. This can be seen in the Generation III status screen; however, in Generation II and Generation IV, egg status screens do not display type.

If a pure Flying Pokémon uses Roost, it becomes a ???-type Pokémon until the end of the turn. However, all Flying-type Pokémon have two types (except Arceus which is unable to learn Roost).

To obtain a ???-type Pokémon, the player must change a Pokémon to be a pure Flying type (with Color Change, Conversion or Conversion 2), followed by using Roost.

The game will not allow the player to use Conversion to convert to the ??? type. Curse, the only move of this type, will be ignored by Conversion, so that a Pokémon with only Curse and Conversion will result in the move failing.

Things related to the ???-type
Arceus's Multitype ability allows it to change types based on which Plate it holds. Although there is no ???-type plate, the code for has a sprite for ???-type Arceus. It is possible that this sprite was included to prevent the game from crashing if its base type was changed to be ??? type instead of Normal.
Arceus, the final Generation IV Pokémon, has the ability Multitype, which lets it attain any of the types with the proper plate. When it attains these types, likewise, it will change appearance. Possibly as a precaution against those who would hack Arceus to change its type without a plate, a ???-type form of Arceus was included in the game, and sprites of it are present in .

Eggs
Pokémon eggs are displayed as having the ???-type in Generation III on their status screen; this is likely because, like all other data, information about a Pokémon egg is supposed to be sparse, including its Original Trainer and ID number. This information did not appear in Generation II, which used a special status screen for Pokémon eggs that was different from that of normal Pokémon, and was removed in Generation IV, when the section of a Pokémon's status screen that displays type was separated from where it was met. From Generation IV on, eggs are counted as Normal Pokémon by the game.

???-type moves
Curse
Curse
Introduced in Generation II, Curse is the only move of the ??? type. Curse behaves differently depending on the type of the Pokémon using it; more specifically, if the Pokémon is of the Ghost, it will cut its HP in half and place a curse on the target Pokémon, while for any other type it will merely lower the Pokémon's Speed to raise Attack and Defense.
The move Curse was given the ???-type when it was introduced in Generation II likely because of its mysterious nature: it is so far the only move which differs in its use between Pokémon of different types. It was retyped with the Ghost in Generation V.

However in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, Explorers of Time, Explorers of Darkness and Explorers of Sky it is considered a Normal move, regardless of whether it is known by a Ghost Pokémon or not.

There is no actual purpose in Curse being a ???-type move besides to give it a mysterious nature. If hacked to be of any other type, the move will still work as normal.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon moves
Vacuum-Cut and Wide Slash are moves that are exclusive to Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and its sequel. However, the game displays the types of the moves as "None" rather than "???".

Shadow moves
Shadow moves are typeless moves, rendering their typing unknown.

In Pokémon Colosseum, Shadow Pokémon have the move Shadow Rush until they are purified. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, more Shadow moves are introduced. Starting in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, these moves are super-effective against regular Pokémon and not very effective against other Shadow Pokémon.

These typeless moves do not run exclusively off the user's Attack or Special Attack stat, instead depending on the move. This would later be extended to moves of the rest of the types in Generation IV.

Weather Ball's type changes depending on the weather condition. If Weather Ball is used when the field is under effect of Shadow Sky, Weather Ball changes to a typeless move.

Other moves
In the main series games, ???-type offensive moves can be hacked to exist. In generations prior to Generation IV, because the ???-type is not programmed to be either physical or special, even with the highest possible base power of 255, the move will do almost no damage.

In addition, although the actual type for the moves Hidden Power and Judgment varies, both appear as Normal moves rather than ???-type moves. Note however that as the signature move of Arceus, the type for Judgment depends on the type of plate held by the user, acting as a Normal move if no plate is held. Thus, the Normal type, and not the ??? type, could be thought of as the unspecialized "default" type. This re-emphasizes the possibility that Curse is considered a ???-type move for its mysterious nature rather than for its different forms when used by Pokémon of different types.
Retirement
The ???-type disappeared with as much fanfare as it appeared with, being removed from the coding of the Generation V games. This was possibly because making exceptions for a type that was used solely by a single, non-damaging move in the case that hackers would alter a Pokémon or move and crash their game had become tiresome for Game Freak. Considering that the only other "official" use of the ???-type had been the unavailable form of Arceus, the type itself was essentially useless.

Template:ElementalTypes The ???-type (Japanese: ???タイプ ??? type) was an elemental type which existed from Generation II until Generation IV.

Characteristics

The ???-type was the oddity among the types. Unlike the Template:Type2 and other glitch types, the ???-type did not exist in the coding of Generation I: it, along with the Dark- and Template:Type2s, was introduced in Generation II, though unlike its counterparts, it did not have as much fanfare. The ???-type existed solely to be the type of Pokémon eggs and the move Curse, a strange move which changed effect depending on whether or not it was used by a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

Things related to the ???-type

Arceus

Arceus, the final Generation IV Pokémon, has the ability Multitype, which lets it attain any of the types with the proper plate. When it attains these types, likewise, it will change appearance. Possibly as a precaution against those who would hack Arceus to change its type without a plate, a ???-type form of Arceus was included in the game, and sprites of it are present in Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver Versions.

From Generation IV on, eggs are counted as Template:Type2 Pokémon by the game.

Curse

The move Curse was given the ???-type when it was introduced in Generation II likely because of its mysterious nature: it is so far the only move which differs in its use between Pokémon of different types. It was retyped with the Template:Type2 in Generation V.
