Ripen (Japanese: じゅくせい Ripen) is an Ability introduced in Generation VIII. It is the signature Ability of Applin's evolutionary line.

Effect

In battle

Ripen doubles the effects from held Berries when eaten in battle. This affects Berries that restore HP or PP (such as Figy Berry and Leppa Berry), Berries that reduce damage (such as Occa Berry), Berries that raise stats (such as Starf Berry), and Berries that deal damage to Pokémon attacking the holder (such as Rowap Berry). The only Berries that have in-battle effects that Ripen does not effect (although the message will still show for these) are the non-volatile status condition-healing Berries (e.g. the Chesto Berry and Lum Berry), the Lansat Berry (i.e. Ripen will not make it increase the critical hit stage by 4), the Micle Berry, and the Custap Berry.

Due to a glitch, when a Pokémon with Ripen uses certain non-Berry items or is targeted by a flung item that inflicts a secondary effect, Ripen displays a message and plays its animation, but has no other effect. The items affected are as below:

Outside of battle

Ripen has no effect outside of battle.
