Ecruteak City is a city in Johto northeast of National Park, northwest of Violet City, and west of Mt. Mortar. Surrounded by wooded terrain, it contains a Pokémon Center, a Poké Mart, Tin Tower, Burned Tower, and the Ecruteak Gym, themed on Ghost-types. The Ecruteak Gym Leader is Morty.

Ecruteak City's motto is: "A Historical City Where the Past Meets the Present", a fitting title, reflected in its buildings' traditional Japanese architecture. It has a role in many legends, such as those of Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, and Ho-oh.

In the Generation II games, it is mentioned that in ancient times, Ho-oh and Lugia lived in two grand towers. But when one of them burned down, becoming what is known today as the Burned Tower, both flew away, never to be seen again in Ecruteak.

In the anime, Morty tells Ash and company of how in ancient times, Ho-oh lived in a great tower in Ecruteak. But when war struck and the tower was burned down, it created Raikou, Entei, and Suicune from creatures who had perished in the fire, and all four disappeared. Later, a new tower, Tin Tower, was built, but Ho-oh never returned.
