Ditto is a recurring character in the Pokémon Newspaper Strip.

Character

Ditto and other Pokémon usually talk to each other, but humans don't understand their language. Ditto is usually seen with a self-satisfied smile. It has a tendency to annoy other Pokémon by transforming into them against their wishes, and ignoring any complaints about the transformation.

History

In Strip 35, Ditto debuted, transformed into Ash's Pikachu. At this point, Ash was annoyed because Brock has been flirting with multiple girls. Ash asked Ditto to transform into a human girl as a prank on Brock. Ditto accomplished this by changing its body shape, wearing clothes and a wig. However, Brock flirted with Ditto anyway and seemed unfazed when he discovered that it was a Ditto.

In Strip 86, Ash's Pikachu refused to enter its Poké Ball, then happily said to itself, "I'm unique and rebellious and my own Pokémon", and "I'm not like any other Pokémon anywhere". Ditto then transformed into a copy of Ash's Pikachu and remarked, "I can fix that!".

In Strip 87, Ash's Pikachu was angry about Ditto copying it, and said that itself is a "distinct, unprecedented, one-of-a-kind individual", "will accept no imitation", and is "utterly unique". Ditto happily said that it always wanted to be unique.

In Strip 88, Pikachu asked Ditto to stop copying it, but Ditto still remained as a Pikachu. Squirtle then said that Ditto doesn't have to be someone else to feel good. Squirtle used itself as an example, remarking that it's everything it wants to be. Ditto then transformed into a copy of Squirtle, and the original Squirtle looked at it with a shocked expression.

In Strip 89, Ash's Squirtle kept trying to convince Ditto to stop copying others. Squirtle remarked, "Just be yourself!" For a moment, Ditto seemed to agree with Squirtle, but then replied "I'm being yourself!" and remained as a copy of Squirtle.

In Strip 90, Ash's Bulbasaur said that Ditto alienated the other Pokémon by copying them. According to Bulbasaur, at some point Ditto copied not only Pikachu and Squirtle, but also Charmander and Snorlax. Bulbasaur is upset by its own decision to keep talking to Ditto regardless of others, and asks itself "What's wrong with me?!"

In Strip 91, Pikachu is happy because Ditto stopped copying it. However, Ditto appeared once again, causing Pikachu to sigh in frustration. Ditto copied Pikachu, and invited the real one to "play Thundershock". Pikachu happily agreed, remarking that it doesn't have to be unique all the time.

In Strip 95, Ditto remarked that Ash's Clefairy is nice and modest, and also said "I want to be just like you!" Clefairy repeatedly asked Ditto not to copy it. Clefairy said that it can't handle being anybody's role model, and that it's too much responsibility. In spite of that, Ditto transformed into a copy of Clefairy. The real Clefairy could not help but shrink using Minimize out of embarrassment. Ditto happily used Minimize as well, to the point where both of them became almost as small as the grass. Clefairy remarked that seeing yourself is sometimes even more embarrassing than being yourself.

In Strip 97, Ditto was mentioned in a conversation. Clefairy was feeling confident for once, and said that it would not shrink, no matter what. Pikachu wanted Clefairy to shrink and slip into a hole to deliver Diglett's birthday present, but then said it would ask Ditto instead.

In Strip 121, Bulbasaur was telling multiple Pokémon what should be their New Year resolutions. According to Bulbasaur, Ditto should resolve to stop copying the rest of the Pokémon.

In Strip 185, Squirtle, Pikachu, and Metapod invited Ditto to a party they were planning to throw for Clefairy. During the conversation, Ditto transformed into Squirtle, Pikachu, and Metapod, and then remarked that it doesn't know "who" to wear to the party.

In Strip 186, Clefairy was unaware that the other Pokémon were planning to throw a party for it, and felt that they were excluding it because they hate it. Clefairy remarked that it doesn't care, because the other Pokémon never do anything fun. Ditto said to Clefairy that there's going to be a "big Poké party", "the best ever". This caused Clefairy to cry.

From Strip 187 to Strip 189, Ditto was seen at the background in Clefairy's party. Squirtle was shocked to realize that it forgot to invite Clefairy to the party. Eventually, multiple Pokémon, including Ditto, said "Dibs on Clefairy's slice!" (referring to the cake)

In the Strip 203 (the finale), Ditto appears with other characters when they were bowing to the reader (like actors bowing to the audience).
