Before You Begin
Hey You, Pikachu! requires the Nintendo 64 VRU to play, and includes a microphone for use with the game. Before you begin, plug the VRU in the Nintendo 64's fourth slot. If the pack-in microphone is missing, any microphone with an audio jack will function as a suitable replacement.
Introduction
Your mother wakes you up to remind you of Professor Oak's test today! Before you depart, she hands you the PokéHelper he provided you. Better hurry!
You meet up with Professor Oak at the Viridian Forest Edge, who instructs you to use your PokéHelper to communicate your feelings to a wild Pikachu. Hold the Z button to turn on the microphone, and speak into it to get its attention. It'll take a few tries for Pikachu to notice you, but once you succeed, Professor Oak will let you keep the PokéHelper!
You're well on your way to becoming friends with Pikachu, but that's all to do for today. It's time to head home and rest!
Day 1: Hey You, Pikachu!
You meet up once again with Pikachu, and Professor Oak first instructs you to wake it up by saying "Pikachu". Once you've done that, Pikachu will be quite lethargic - why not give it some energy by greeting it? After you've done so, Pikachu will pick up a strange, multicolored sphere... whatever could it be? To find out, click the B button while the hand icon is pointed at it. You'll find out that it's a beach ball. Words in red are words that Pikachu will understand, so be sure to look out for those!
Now that you know what it is, why not try playing with it? This is a good opportunity to test the clarity of your voice - Professor Oak will instruct you to tell Pikachu to "throw it". If Pikachu heard you correctly, it will throw the ball towards you. If your voice wasn't clear enough, Pikachu will have misheard your instruction as "toss it". If Pikachu tossed the ball, it might be worth adjusting the position and distance between your mouth and the microphone.
Something from above catches Pikachu's attention, and Professor Oak suggests that you ask it "what's up there?". Pikachu will attempt to describe what it saw. If you didn't understand it, Oak sure did! Pikachu will then pull out a fruit and ask you to tell it its name. Clicking B on the fruit will reveal that it's an apple, but Pikachu seems to have been messing with you and will toss the apple aside regardless of what you say.
After this lovely excursion, it's unfortunately time to say good-bye to Pikachu. As you depart, Pikachu curiously looks back over its shoulder. It seems like Pikachu is warming up to you.
Tomorrow will be your first real mission. Be prepared for your first test of the bond between you and Pikachu!
Day 2: A Pokémon Picnic, Part 1
You're greeted to a morning welcome by Pikachu, who's come to your door to invite you to play! Give it a quick greeting, and it'll lead you to Ochre Woods.
In Ochre Woods, you and Pikachu will be invited to a picnic hosted by Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur asks you to bring it three ingredients - an onion, a carrot and a wild herb. Depending on what you bring to Bulbasaur, you'll either produce a tasty stew (by bringing it four ingredients - the three aforementioned ingredients, plus one duplicate), a weird stew (four items that do not meet the requirements) or a mystery soup (less than four ingredients). The tasty stew is worth 780 Pika Points, the weird stew is worth 200, and the mystery soup is only worth 100. Pika Points are used as currency, so you'll definitely want to aim to make a tasty stew.
In the level, ingredients are scattered across the area. Many of these items will distract Pikachu, so you'll have to keep it focused on the task at hand in order to clear the level in the allotted time!
Explore the level with the control stick, and when you find an ingredient you need, tell Pikachu to "come here". Once it arrives, tell Pikachu the name of the ingredient, and if it understood you, it should begin to look around for it. Once it picks it up, a helpful pair of Magnemite will offer to deliver it to Bulbasaur for you. If Pikachu is carrying an ingredient you want, say "sure". If Pikachu is carrying an ingredient you don't need, say "don't do that". When you reject Pikachu's offer, it will either toss or eat the ingredient, depending on the ingredient it is holding. Unfortunately, while Pikachu will never eat carrots, it will eat onions and wild herbs, and unless multiple have spawned in the level, Pikachu consuming these ingredients will prevent you from producing a tasty soup for the time being. Be warned that Pikachu may mishear you!
After either the time runs out or four ingredients have been sent, Bulbasaur will call Pikachu over to start the picnic. It and Charmander both happily partake in the feast, and Pikachu's reaction to the food will differ depending on the stew produced. After a hearty meal, you head home and say goodbye once again to Pikachu.
