Comments: I chose Venusaur, because, you know, it's my favourite of the three Generation I Starters. And in Gen I, it shines better than ever. This is because Venusaur's Razor Leaf will always score a critical hit in Gen I (due to the different critical hit ratio calculations), and because if you use a Toxic/Leech Seed combo, the poison damage goes up and up every turn as well as the Leech Seed absorbing due to them being on the same multiplier (only in Gen I).
Next up, Pidgeot. I chose this because its my favourite Pokémon. But if you don't want to use one, you're really not missing out on much. Back in Gen I, Pidgeot was even worse than it is now, as all it has is Fly and that's pretty much it. You just have to round it out with filler moves such as Quick Attack and Wing Attack. But as I said, it's my favourite Pokémon, so I just can't resist it.
Third is Hypno. You might be wondering why I would use Hypno, when seeing as Alakazam was such a threat back then. Well, truth be told, I haven't got a GB Link Cable (I have a GBA Link Cable though), so no Gen I or II trading for me. He's still a pretty good Poke though, if you want to use a Psychic type and you can't trade (but if you can trade, AlakazamAlakazamAlakazamAlakazamAlakazam).
Number four is Vaporeon. I love this thing. It looks beautiful, it has OK stats I guess, and I am partial to the Water type. This little guy is really good if you want a Water type, but once again, you might want to go for a Lapras or Starmie instead. But undeniably, this mermaid/dog thing gets much more interesting in future generations when it gains abilities like Water Absorb and Hydration.
Five is good ol' Dragonite. Despite not being as fearsome as a certain Champion would lead you to believe, Dragonite isn't that bad of a Pokémon in Gen I, but there just aren't enough Dragon type moves back then (there's just one, and that's Dragon Rage). It also evolves way too late (as you can see by my team's levels, I had to grind my Dragonair a bit so that I could have a Dragonite by the end of the playthrough).
Last but not least, we have the shocking Zapdos. This Sesame Street character lookalike is a brilliant Pokémon, (though probably isn't my favourite Legendary bird as Articuno takes that honour) and should be the go-to Electric type outside of Magneton. But as you can see by my Zapdos' level, it didn't really have much use as my team were in their early-mid 40s when I caught it. Still a good Pokémon though.
