Webster's mail and Kenya details (HGSS)

After fiddling with it, the games seem pretty impervious to shenanigans with Kenya and her Grass Mail.

(In the USA version of HeartGold)

For Webster's friend to recognize and keep the Pokemon you show him, all of Species (Spearow/Fearow), OT (Webster), OT Gender (Male), TID (1001), SID (0), PID (6B5E), Region (ENG), and Nickname (Kenya) have to be correct in the Pokemon's data. With save editing, I attempted individually lowering met level and current level, changing the pokeball, encounter location, IVs, ribbons, encounter terrain (not sure if this has an official name in gen iv?), and Pokerus status--none of these matter. I'll add that with the latest PKHex, you cannot change Nature, Gender, or Ability slot without the PID automatically updating, so the game may or may not be checking those explicitly. I also do not know if Kenya's data is actually achievable with an in-game catch by the player. In short, the player having the same OT, TID, and SID as Webster will not allow just any Spearow to work. I suspect that any region game equipped with an English keyboard could successfully rename "ひきゃく" to "Kenya", for example (as long as the character encoding matches between versions) and the Nickname check would pass.

For the friend to accept the mail, the letter must be on Grass Mail; the letter contents must be exactly the same; the letter's OT (Webster), TID (233), SID (0), OT Gender (Male), and Region (ENG) must all be correct. If the player has matching info here, they are able to successfully deliver a forgery on Grass Mail.

For traded Pokemon and mail to be accepted, Webster's Mail/Kenya's origin games' regions must be the same. One Kenya is identical to another, one Webster's mail is identical to another after trading. I also tested trading between USA and JPN copies of HeartGold. This fails because the OT and Region for both the Pokemon and Grass Mail differ by game region. At least for USA and JPN (and KOR as well), the mail always has the same text byte-wise, but the sender won't match, and Webster's friend will not accept the mail. Presumably, one could trade both Kenya and Grass Mail from USA > JPN > a different USA copy and they would work there.

But yeah, kind of surprised that Kenya and the Grass Mail have different TIDs. Charatara (talk) 09:15, 14 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

I also tried writing an identical Grass Mail in Diamond and traded it over to HeartGold, but the friend doesn't accept it. Charatara (talk) 10:06, 14 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
