With the release of Nintendo Switch 2, some titles have an upgrade pack, where the Nintendo Switch version of the game can be enhanced for the Nintendo Switch 2. These games have physical releases as a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, which is a bundle that comprises of the base game and its upgrade pack. However, the upgrade pack can also be purchased as a standalone digital purchase on the Nintendo eShop for players who own the base game.[1]
Upgrade packs contain enhancements and occasionally additional game content. The original Nintendo Switch game can still be played on Nintendo Switch once upgraded, though the features and content of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition can only be played on Nintendo Switch 2. However, no Pokémon games released so far have received additional game content through upgrade packs, with upgrade packs instead focusing solely on improved graphical performance.
Although all Nintendo Switch 2 game cards can be physically inserted into the Nintendo Switch, doing so with Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games such as Mario Kart World will produce an error message. These Nintendo Switch 2 Editions will instead play the base version of the game.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is currently the only Pokémon game to have received an upgrade pack and accompanying Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
