Flavor text Generation VII The Pokémon's attacks become critical hits if the target is poisoned. Generation VIII The Pokémon's attacks become critical hits if the target is poisoned. Generation IX The Pokémon's attacks become critical hits if the target is poisoned. Champions The Pokémon's attacks become critical hits if the target is poisoned or badly poisoned.

Merciless (Japanese: ひとでなし Brute) is an Ability introduced in Generation VII. It is the signature Ability of Mareanie and Toxapex.

In battle

Attacks used by the Pokémon with this Ability will always become critical hits against poisoned targets, unless that target has Battle Armor or Shell Armor or is under the effects of Lucky Chant.

Outside of battle

Merciless has no effect outside of battle.

Trivia

• The Japanese name of the Ability, ひとでなし Hitodenashi, contains a pun on the word ひとで hitode (starfish), explaining why it is a signature Ability of Mareanie and Toxapex.
