Synopsis

On their way to the next town, Ash calls out to Misty to hurry up as at the rate she is going, he'll never become a Pokémon Master and that they have to move fast to keep up with the other Pokémon trainers. Misty replies by saying that Ash can move as fast as he wants, but that it takes more than speed to become a Pokémon Master, which results in Ash spinning around asking her what she means by that. Misty then tells Ash he knows exactly what she means. Brock then steps in between Ash and Misty's quarrel and tells them to stop arguing and that niether of them will ever learn to care of their Pokémon properly if they are always fighting. Ash and Misty then glare at each other and Brock looks at them both sternly. The book then gives a description on how Ash started his adventure and met Misty and Brock. Ash then says that Misty started it which results in Misty rolling her eyes and saying that is typical Ash. Brock then sighs and asks if they can go now. Ash then pushes his cap over his eyes and says that he is fine with that and that he should be busy catching Pokémon right now. Ash then walks away with Pikachu and Misty says that it is fine with that too. Brock then turns and walks away, but Misty lags behind muttering that Ash thinks that he is so great. She then kicks at the dirt with her sneaker and thinks about how Ash is always talking about how he's going to be the world's greatest Pokémon Master and that he acts like he is the only Pokémon trainer in the world. Misty then thinks that she is trainer too and about the Water Pokémon she has raised, such as Staryu and Starmie. After that, Misty thinks that it isn't easy to raise the aforementioned Pokémon. Suddenly, Misty looks up and notices that Ash isn't there and that she trailed too far behind and runs down the trail.

After reaching Ash and Brock, Misty asks where they think they are going. Ash replies by saying they are going to Cerulean City which makes Misty's heart skip a beat thinking that they cannot go to Cerulean City. She asks Ash why they are going there. Ash tells her that it's none of her business, but he is going there to battle the Gym Leader to get the Badge and that Misty knows that he needs eight badges to enter the Pokémon League. Misty then says that she knows it in her head and that she has to try to make Ash not go to the Cerulean Gym. She tells him that there are scary Ghost Pokémon in the gym and tries to make a scary face (which is supposedly what they look like). Ash instead laughs and says "Nice face, Misty" and turns to Brock and Pikachu, telling them to get going. Misty then runs in front of Ash and blocks the path, suggesting they go to Vermilion City instead, as there are lots of Pokémon there and because it's right on the water. Ash interrupts saying that they are going to Cerulean City to get the Badge. Brock says that it makes sense to him and Ash tells them to go already. Misty sighs and thinks that once they arrive, they'll find out her secret and wonders what she will do.

While Misty, Ash, and Brock were on there way to Cerulean City, Team Rocket seems to be there already. They break into a warehouse and see a giant vacuum. James notes the giant hose on it which looks wide enough to fit one person inside and Meowth says that is too good to be true. Jessie says it is true and that they got what they need. She starts a sentence saying when they are through with James finishing saying that Cerulean City will never be the same!

Meanwhile, Misty, Ash, Brock, and Pikachu have arrived at Cerulean City and because Brock has to shop for some Pokémon food ingredients, he has to go. Misty tells Ash that she has to go too and Ash asks where she is going only to get no reply from Misty while she ducks down a side street. Misty thinks to herself the she couldn't face Ash and Brock yet. After turning a corner, Misty saw the Cerulean City Gym. The Gym was large, round and looked like a carousel. On top of it was a domed roof which had a giant Dewgong (though the book says Seel). Part of Misty wanted to go inside but Misty thought to herself that she couldn't go and that if she stays away until Ash gets the badge, he won't find out her secret.
