Ash Ketchum (Japanese: サトシ Satoshi) is the main character of Takeshi Shudō's anime novelization Pocket Monsters: The Animation. He is based on the same character from the anime.

Character

Ash is a 10-year-old Pokémon Trainer from Pallet Town, located in an unnamed country similar to 20th century Japan. He is said to be an adult because in this country, children are considered to become adults once they are 10 years old. In Pallet Town, there are not many job openings for people as young as 10 years old, so most of them try to become Pokémon Trainers.

He left his town and started a journey to catch Pokémon and collect Badges. Ash aims to rename Pallet Town into Ash Town (Japanese: サトシタウン Satoshi Town). He is one of several Pokémon Trainers from Pallet Town with the dream of renaming the town after themselves, which is achievable by entering the national Pokémon Trainer ranking with a ranking higher than 931st, which was the highest ranking achieved by a Trainer from Pallet Town in the past.

Ash wants to surpass his rival Gary Oak, and also feels motivated to become a better Pokémon Trainer than his absent father and grandfather, who apparently failed to become Pokémon Trainers.

History

Backstory

Ash was raised by his mother. Ash's father left when he was born, and Ash's maternal grandfather left when Delia was young. Ash's father and grandfather never came back. Ash has seen them in photos. Ash lives in the Pallet House, which is the only restaurant in Pallet Town; it also has an inn on the second floor.

When Ash was 3 years old, he started being rebellious against her for the first time. However, Delia was able to easily make him behave well again by pretending to cry.

When Ash was 5 years old, he got his first computer. At first, Delia falsely told him that his father and grandfather were amazing Pokémon Trainers so Ash could use the computer to find information about them on the internet. But then she quickly revealed that this was actually a lie. In truth, Ash's father and grandfather probably failed at becoming Pokémon Trainers. They never participated in the Pokémon League tournaments, and they were never in any of the lists of 10,000 best Trainers.

When Ash was bullied in preschool and school, Delia would complain with the fathers of the bullies. The men in town wanted to keep her happy, because her restaurant had a very good reputation; her food was considered very tasty and nourishing, except it became inedible when she was in a bad mood. The bullying against Ash ended eventually, and he never focused too much on studying, so as a result he had more time to play around as a child.

Delia bought a Voltorb-themed alarm clock for Ash's 10th birthday. The clock opens in two pieces to reveal the clock inside. It makes a "biriri" sound (based on Voltorb's Japanese name: ビリリダマ Biriridama), then eventually makes a loud explosion noise. This item was not available in her small town, so she bought it in the Celadon Department Store. She traveled for three days to go there and back, and she also waited in line for five hours at the store to buy it.

Days before the journey

The past ten days before Ash began his journey, he had been practicing possible poses and catchphrases that he intended to use as future Pokémon Trainer. According to the dictionary in Ash's computer, Pokémon Trainers often use the English word "Get!" when catching a Pokémon (although people in Ash's country speak Japanese), so he decided that he will use this word as well.

Ash had also been repeatedly watching some videos by Professor Oak. Some videos were about Pokémon, while others were about how to care for oneself, reminding the viewer to bathe, shave, and wash clothes regularly.

The last day before Ash's journey, Delia noticed that he was still awake at 1 AM. She entered his room without knocking, and saw him practicing poses. She advised that he should be sleeping at this hour, but he remarked that he is an adult now because he is 10 years old.

Ash was confident that he would become a better Trainer than his father and grandfather. Delia encouraged Ash to keep making cool poses, claiming that this at least makes Ash more stylish than his father and grandfather, which made Ash feel embarrassed.

Ash and Delia watched a video where Professor Oak recommended choosing either Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle, although other unknown Pokémon were also available. Ash did not want to admit that was still unable to choose a Pokémon, so he claimed that his choice was a secret.

Delia told him to wear his pajamas, and warned him that she would not wake him up the next day, since she always leaves home early to buy ingredients next town for her restaurant. Ash was confident that he would have no problem waking up early the next day, but he actually found it hard to sleep while thinking about choosing his first Pokémon.

Delia secretly wondered if Ash may never come back if he was anything like his father and grandfather. She used to cry easily in the past, and then never cried after Ash's father left. She started crying again because Ash would leave, but then she put on a brave face because she hated teary farewells.

Receiving the starter Pokémon

Ash started his journey when he was 10 years, 10 months, and 10 days old.

Once a Dodrio let out a trio of cries to announce it was morning, Delia left for the market. Ash heard the Dodrio, but remained sleeping. He was dreaming about choosing between Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. While he was dreaming about throwing Poké Balls, he heard the Voltorb alarm clock and threw it to the ground like a Poké Ball, breaking the clock.

At 9 AM, Ash woke up because he heard the bell ringing in the Pallet Town Square. He also found the Voltorb alarm clock broken in the ground. Ash was late, so he left home in a hurry, just in time to see Delia returning from the market. Delia started to think that Ash is hopeless like his father and grandfather, even though he is also her child.

Ash left the house in a hurry, while still wearing his pajamas. At this point, he would settle for any of the three starters: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. Ash was supposed to take some luggage with him, but he forgot it. At some point, Delia left the house as well, to deliver his luggage. She left the restaurant closed for the time being.
