Negatives in the catch formula?

It appears that if the capture rate is high, and the power up level is low, the inside of the part raised to the exponent can be negative. This obviously can't be used in game, as if it was raised to a non-integer power, then the probability to catch would become a complex number. Does anyone know what actually happens in that case?
