Woodward is a skilled tree surgeon who became known for miraculously reattaching a {{p|Sawsbuck}}'s broken horn. After [[Serena's Braixen]] accidentally broke her branch, {{an|Serena}} approached him for help after a recommendation from [[Nurse Joy]], accompanied by a disguised [[James]]. Woodward declined to fix the branch, explaining that Sawsbuck was only healed due to its willpower, and challenged Braixen to a {{pkmn|battle}} to prove hers, using his {{p|Gallade}}.

Following an interruption by {{TRT}}, Woodward admitted that Braixen's branch was already beyond repair to begin with. He explained that he wanted to teach Braixen the importance of letting go of past memories in order to become stronger. Woodward resumed the battle with Braixen demonstrating the {{m|Fire Blast}} she learned moments before with aplomb, and ended the battle with no clear winner, pleased that Braixen had proved itself. Before Serena left, he revealed to have grafted the fragments of Braixen's old branch onto a sapling so they could grow into new life.

After Team Rocket had been blasted off, the battle was resumed, but after Gallade was hit by Braixen's newly learned {{m|Fire Blast}}, the battle was called off by Woodward.
