An '''Evolution Item''' (Japanese: '''{{tt|進化|しんか}}アイテム''' ''Evolution Item'') is any of the items required to evolve a Pokémon in [[Pokémon Pinball]] and [[Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire]]. Some of them are items found in the [[core series]] such as the [[Fire Stone]]. Some additional Evolution Items represent other concepts such as [[experience]] and the [[Game Link Cable]]. All Evolution Items work the same way; the different items are just cosmetic changes.

==Terminology==
The term "Evolution Item" is found in the manuals of both [[Pokémon Pinball]] and [[Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire]]. The Japanese equivalent "{{tt|進化|しんか}}アイテム" is found in the Japanese version of both manuals.

The in-game text of [[Pokémon Pinball]] refers to the Evolution stones using the word "item" in the text "Get item" and "Item not found".

==List of items==
In [[Pokémon Pinball]], there are seven Evolution Items, which are related to all [[methods of Evolution]] found in [[Generation I]]:

* [[Fire Stone]], [[Leaf Stone]], [[Water Stone]], [[Thunder Stone]], and [[Moon Stone]]
* [[Experience]] symbol, which evolves Pokémon that would normally evolve by [[level]] in the [[core series]] games
* [[Game Link Cable]], which evolves Pokémon that would normally evolve by [[trade]] in the [[core series]] games

In [[Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire]], there are ten Evolution Items, which are related to all [[methods of Evolution]] found in [[Generation III]]:

* The seven Evolution Items from Pokémon Pinball
* [[Friendship]] heart, which evolves Pokémon that would normally evolve by friendship in the [[core series]] games
* [[Sun Stone]]
* [[PokéBlock]], which evolves {{p|Feebas}}

In [[Pokémon Pinball]], it is possible to "evolve" any Pokémon that does not have an Evolution, but this does not change its appearance. It evolves using experience.

Pokémon that evolve by being traded while holding an [[Evolution item]] (such as {{p|Seadra}} and {{p|Clamperl}}) only require a Game Link Cable to evolve.

==Finding the Evolution Items==
Once the player chooses a Pokémon to evolve, three repeated Evolution Items appear in various parts of the pinball table. For instance, the player is required to get three Thunder Stones to evolve a {{p|Pikachu}} into a {{p|Raichu}} in either game.

===Pokémon Pinball===
In [[Pokémon Pinball]], the player is required to search for Evolution Items by hitting different spots on the table. 3 have items while the others don't have them. When the ball hits any of the correct 3 spots, an Evolution Item appears somewhere on the table, and the player must get this item before trying other spots. If the ball hits any of the incorrect spots, no item appears and the player is required to wait a few seconds before trying again.

During the Evolution Mode, there is one small blue arrow pointing at each spot. The arrows temporarily disappear whenever the spots are not available (either because an Evolution Item is already somewhere on the table, or because the player is required to wait after hitting an incorrect spot). Each arrow permanently disappears (for the duration of the current Evolution Mode) when the respective spot has been hit.

Depending on the Pokémon being evolved, there could be between 4 and 7 spots, making it simpler for Pokémon that can evolve (4 or 5 spots), and more difficult on fully evolved Pokémon or Pokémon that are not part of any evolutionary line at the time (6 or 7 spots). The only exception is Horsea, which can evolve, but there are 7 spots present at its Evolution Mode.

In the [[Red Field]], there are up to 7 spots, in order: the group of {{p|Voltorb}}, the left {{p|Diglett}}, the right Diglett, the left Bonus Multiplier Counter (near the left Diglett), the right Bonus Multiplier Counter (near the left Diglett), the [[Staryu (Pinball)|Staryu]] button and the [[Bellsprout (Pinball)|Bellsprout]].

In the [[Blue Field]], there are up to 7 spots, in order: the group of {{p|Shellder}}, the {{p|Poliwag}}, the {{p|Psyduck}}, the left Bonus Multiplier Counter (below the {{p|Slowpoke}}), the right Bonus Multiplier Counter (below the {{p|Cloyster}}), the Slowpoke and the Cloyster.

===Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire===
In [[Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire]], each Evolution Item simply appears somewhere on the table. Once the player gets one item, the next one appears, until all three items have been acquired. One item appears at a time. Once the player gets one item, the next one appears, until all three repeated items have been acquired. (There is no mechanic or need to find spots with items as in the previous game.)

==Scores==
In [[Pokémon Pinball]], the player gets 10,000,000 points by hitting an Evolution Item. Any [[Ball Upgrade]]s are ignored (so an improved ball such as an Ultra Ball or Master Ball does not award any more points).

In [[Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire]], getting an Evolution Item awards 10,000 points, which is multiplied by the type of Poké Ball as usual. For instance, it would be 20,000 points with a Great Ball.
