Route 111 (Japanese: 111番道路 Route 111) is a route in central Hoenn, connecting Mauville City, Route 112, and Route 113. The Desert Ruins, Mirage Tower, Trainer Hill and the home of the Winstrate family are all located on this route.

Route description

Southern segment

After departing Mauville City, this route travels north, with a brief curve to the east. As it returns to a south-north alignment, it passes the only water area along the route. On the shore of the pond is the Winstrate family house. At this location, Trainers are put to the test, being forced to battle all four members of the family back-to-back with no reprieve in between to restore the vitality of their Pokémon. The player faces the four in the following order: Victor, Victoria, Vivi, and Vicky. When a Trainer completes the task and defeats the family, they are given a Macho Brace by Victoria Winstrate.

Directly east of the Winstrate house in Emerald is Trainer Hill, a battle facility designed to test the mettle of Trainers from around Hoenn.

To the north of this area is a blockade of crumbling rocks that can be eliminated using Rock Smash. North of the blockade, the route begins to snake toward the west. Along the way, Interviewers Gabby and Ty can be battled. At the end of the southern segment is the southern end of Route 112, as well as another Trainer.

Desert

The desert in the center of Route 111 cannot be traversed without the Go-Goggles. There are fiveRSORAS/nineE sets of Trainers with most of them using Pokémon accustomed to the desert conditions, such as Sandslash. The Desert Ruins, the resting place of Regirock, are found at the southernmost point in the desert.

The Root Fossil and the Claw Fossil can be found here. In Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire, they lie in the sand, and one can be obtained by the player, but the other will sink into the sand to be lost forever. In Emerald, the Fossils are instead in Mirage Tower, and once one of the two Fossils is taken, the tower will collapse; the other Fossil sinks with the tower, but it can be recovered in the Desert Underpass.

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, there is a Hex Maniac in the Mach Bike exclusive part of the desert who the player can speak to while on the Mach Bike. This is one of the three NPCs who must be spoken to in order to obtain both Bikes.

Northern segment

This segment can be entered from Route 112 to the east or, if they have the Go-Goggles, south into the desert. Continuing along, Route 111 intersects the northern terminus of Route 112 just to the southwest of the large tree. Cooltrainer Wilton is also located at this junction. Heading north and, likewise, uphill on the lower portion of the route, the next point of interest is a boyRSE/AaruneORAS located near a large tree. By talking to him, Trainers will receive TM43 (Secret Power)RSE/TM94 (Secret Power)ORAS.

In this area, Trainers can receive a Razz Berry from a girl, battle Cooltrainer Brooke, the first of 12 Trainers along this route, and heal their party at a location known as the Old Lady's Rest Stop. The old lady, however, will continually ask the player if they want to take another rest, so in order to leave, the player must answer "no" when she asks. To the north of the rest stop, there is a Mach Bike ledge, the first of two along Route 111 that allows access to an upper cliff. North of this location, the route travels west near a pair of soft soil patches before entering Route 113.

Route 111 in the anime

Route 111 was first featured in What You Seed is What You Get, and served as the site for the next few episodes during Ash and his friends' journey to Fallarbor Town. Landmarks located on this route include Natasha's watermelon garden, Lake May, the Mirage Kingdom, and Eliza's greenhouse, where May caught herself a Skitty.

In Candid Camerupt, Ash and his friends ran out of water while crossing the desert, but they were saved from heat exhaustion by the Winstrate family. As the group wanted to repay being saved somehow, the family asked for the group to battle with them. They explained that the family's son, Vito, had left home earlier to challenge the Hoenn League, and while no one else in the family was as skilled of a Trainer as him, they still held battles in his honor.

First, Brock and his Mudkip battled Victor and his Zigzagoon, and were defeated by its surprising Thunderbolt, which the family had taught it to produce them electricity. Next, Victoria battled against May with her Roselia. Due to being reminded of her rival Drew and his Roselia, May got immediately pumped up and quickly defeated Roselia with her Beautifly. Next up was Max's turn. Borrowing Ash's Corphish against Vivi's Marill, Max intended to simply tire Marill out with Harden without attacking it, but Corphish disobeyed him and attacked Marill directly, quickly defeating it.

Finally, it was Ash's turn to battle Vicky, the head of the family, and her Camerupt with his Pikachu. However, when Pikachu's Iron Tail landed on Camerupt's face, it got angry and started using Eruption while rampaging around. It threatened to destroy the family's crops, but Vito, who was hiding nearby, used his Alakazam's Rain Dance to cool Camerupt down before it could damage the crops. After dealing with Team Rocket trying to steal Pikachu again, the group continued on their journey.

Trivia

  • Route 111 has different background music depending on where in the route the player is. Outside of the desert the music is Route 110; in the desert the music is Route 111.
  • In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, several Trainers found in the desert mention how they're wearing Go-Goggles to protect themselves from the sandstorm, although this doesn't show up on their sprites, much like with the player. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the player's overworld model now depicts them wearing Go-Goggles once entering the desert with them, while several NPC Trainers now complain about having sand in their eyes, due to them not wearing Go-Goggles.
