By creating your account you are now able to edit pages, join discussions, and expand the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia. Before you jump in, here are some ground rules:

  • Be nice to everyone. It's in the code of conduct.
  • Make good edits. Preview them before you save to make sure they're perfect the first time around.
  • Use wikicode and link templates when adding content to a page.
  • Use proper grammar and spelling, and read the manual of style.
  • You can't create a userpage until you've added to the encyclopedia. It's a privilege. See the userspace policy.
  • Use talk pages to resolve editing disputes. Don't "edit war," or constantly re-edit/undo the same thing on a page.
  • If you have a question about something, be proactive. Take a look at our FAQ. If you're still stuck, ask for help. The staff won't bite.
  • Sign all talk page posts with four tildes (~~~~). This will turn into your name and the time you wrote the comment.
  • For more handy links, see the welcome portal.
Thank you, and have a good time editing here!

Romanisation

Hey Willyh106, thanks for weeding out the errors with the Korean romanisations/translations! Just one thing when romanising moves, I'm fairly certain the romanisations shouldn't be in camelcase (e.g. Nureugi rather than NuReuGi), and I don't think the Revised Romanisation system uses camelcase. Also, feel free to standardise all pages to use the Revised Romanisation system (로마자 표기법) because some older pages may not have used them. --Wowy(토크) 23:31, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

Yes, first of all thank you for coming all the way here to talk with me :) I know that camelcase is not used in the official rules; the reason I used it was because I thought using camelcase would make it easier for non Korean speakers to understand the proper Korean pronunciation. What I'm trying to say is that if we just write it as "Nureugi", for example, non Korean natives might be confused since it can be pronounced as "Nur-eu-gi" or "Nu-Reug-I" and so on. By using camelcase, I thought that I could make clear how to divide the 음절 (syllables?) and that was why I steered away from the rules. Please give me your thoughts on my reply. Thanks. --Willyh106 ㅓTalkㅏ 14:16, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
I understand what you're getting at, but I still feel it would be more proper to go by the official convention. I also asked staff (abcboy) who preferred not to have them in camelcase. But keep up the good work!
On a similar note, another user, SilSinn9801, also asked me to check over the Korean romanisation on her userpage User:SilSinn9801/List of common phrases from fortune-teller tents (Festival Plaza) in other languages. I don't think I can get to it, so you can go ahead if you feel up for it (but no pressure). --Wowy(토크) 11:00, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
Okay, then I'll do the romanizations without the camelcase from now on and I'll edit the ones that I already romanized. About the festival plaza stuff, I'll try my best to look over it. Thanks. --Willyh106 ㅓTalkㅏ 11:09, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
Thankee for your recent edits in my subpage. Now I would like to ask about a certain word in particular: 멀었어. Google Translate romanized it as meol-eoss-eo (not sure what scheme they use) and you changed it to meoreosseo. After reading your userpage and learning that you are a Korean native, I have no reason to question you, but I would like to ask if that romaja is only used for that word (which Google translates to “It’s far”) and if there are other real Korean words like 머럿서 or 머러써 that might have the same romaja and thus could be confused with 멀었어 (unless any of them is romanized differently to ensure unambiguity). Thankee! ‑‑SilSinn (TIDs768426S123446UM) (talk) 17:56, 30 January 2019 (UTC)
P.S. Also to Wowy, my userpage states that my gender is undisclosed (saying he/she, his/her, etc.) and that only those people with my 3DS friend code know my real gender, given that I have played all 3DS games as both genders (sometimes playing as him, othertimes playing as her) to confuse other online players who might have added me to their Acquaintance (PSS) or VIP (FestiPlaza) lists (although the real reason I play both genders is to pick up any differences in background music under certain situations –evident in ORAS– and how different characters –especially Fashion-related NPCs– address or interact with my player character). ‑‑SilSinn (TIDs768426S123446UM) (talk) 17:56, 30 January 2019 (UTC)
Yes I see what you are talking about. According to the official guideline, romanization should be done in a way that reflects the actual pronunciation. For instance, in 멀었어, the "ㅇ" in the second and third syllables has no particular sound; it's just a placeholder. So, the word 멀었어 is actually pronounced as [머러써] (the "ㄹ" at the bottom of the first syllable takes place of the second syllable's "ㅇ" and the "ㅆ" at the bottom of the second syllable takes place of the third syllable's "ㅇ") And since 머=meo, 러=reo, 써=sseo, it should be romanized as "meoreosseo" (or meo-reo-sseo, the "-" can be put in to make syllable identification more precise). The reason google romanized it as meol-eoss-eo is because 멀=meol, 었=eoss (었 should actually be "eot" because of another rule, but since 어=eo and ㅆ=ss, looks like google decided to separate 어 and ㅆ for unknown reason and put it back together, which is wrong), and 어=eo.
Now to your question, since there is no placeholder "ㅇ" to alter the pronunciation, 머러써 is pronounced as it is. And 멀었어 is pronounced as [머러써], as we have seen above. Because 멀었어 and 머러써 have the same pronunciations, they thus have same romanizations. But, thankfully no such word as 머러써 exists.
As for 머럿서, according to another rule, the "ㅅ" in the second syllable transforms the "ㅅ" in the third syllable to a "ㅆ". Also, according to yet ANOTHER rule, the "ㅅ" in the second syllable gets transformed into "ㄷ" Thus, 머럿서 has the pronunciation of [머럳써], instead of the pronunciation [머러써], which 멀었어 and 머러써 have (notice the pronunciation difference at the second syllable).
Since 머럿서 has a different pronunciation, it is romanized differently. But according to yet ANOTHER rule, the transformation of 'ㅅ' into 'ㅆ' at the third syllable is NOT reflected in the romanization. Thus, the romanization is meo-reot-seo. If the change to "ㅆ" is taken into account, the romanization would be meo-reot-sseo. But, thankfully, no such word as 머럿서 exists.
There's my explanation; it is quite complicated and if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask! --Willyh106 ㅓTalkㅏ 08:48, 31 January 2019 (UTC)

Thankee!

Thanks for your review of Korean romaja in my list of common phrases from Festival Plaza’s fortune-teller tents. Your knowledge of Korean could deserve you a spot on Bulbapedia’s staff, or maybe something better than that.

Had you had more spare time, money, and more helping hands to aid you, then you could perhaps establish the long-needed Korean branch of Encyclopædiæ Pokémonis, the alliance that includes Bulbapedia (English) and six other Pokémon-centric wiki encyclopedias encompassing Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and both Simplified & Traditional Chinese (both served by 52poké) – in other words, EP currently covers almost all of the 9 official languages supported by Nintendo in the Pokémon games, except Korean. With more people like you, it might me possible to complete this EP family.

Thankee again! ‑‑SilSinn (TIDs768426S123446UM) (talk) 18:06, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words; I think you are giving me too much praise xD Unfortunately, I'm still a student so I don't think I'll be able to take on such a big project. But, if I get lots of free time and later on, I'll at least try to establish something like that! Feel free to ask Korean related questions to me if you happen to have any :) --Willyh106 ㅓTalkㅏ 13:13, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
