SECTION 1
What is Pokémon?
Pokémon is a franchise based on catching fictional creatures (Pokémon) in special balls (titled Poké Balls) and train them to battle other Pokémon. Originating in Japan, this franchise has become extremely popular.
What is most likely the most famous part of the franchise would be the handheld video games. The very first Pokémon games ever to exist are Pokémon Red and Green in Japan, for the Game Boy.
Since then they have made several improved versions of the games, entirely new generations with new Pokémon to collect and new areas to explore, remakes and many spin-offs.
Another part of the franchise is the animated TV show, featuring a young trainer named Ash, who goes on a journey to become a “Pokémon Master.” With each new generation of games, they have made a new season of the TV show following the basic storyline of the games.
There have been over 11 movies so far, the most recent one (at the time of writing) is Arceus and the Jewel of Life. The TV show for some reason has no references to the movies, even though it features the same characters, and there are no signs of this ever changing.
And lastly, we have the trading card game. In this game, you collect a deck of 60 cards and battle with them in a method very different than in the games or TV show. There are special cards known as “ex” or “Level X” cards, stronger versions of the Pokémon.

Common information
In the video games, Pokémon have a level ranging from 1 to 100 that mostly states how powerful the Pokémon is. At a certain level, most Pokémon “evolve” into a new kind of Pokémon, usually with increased strength and always with a different appearance, though usually very similar to its previous form.
Pokémon have certain “moves,” or the way in which they attack another Pokémon. In the games, these can be learned from a TM, a Technical Machine, or an HM, a Hidden Machine. TM's can be bought at a Poké Mart, stores spread throughout towns and cities, obtained by accomplishing a certain objective, or found. These can be used once on a Pokémon that can learn the move. An HM is obtained only by completing a certain objective and can be used more than once. These all help the player navigate the main world in some way.
Not all Pokémon can learn the same move, though, because of their types. Their type is basically what kind of moves they can learn. It is basically like a Rock Paper Scissors game, because some types are better against others in battle. Grass is good against water, but weak against fire. There are many different types, and different moves also do more damage than others.
Each Pokémon has a specific name, usually made by combining multiple words relating to the Pokémon. Take Torchic, for example. It is a combination of torch and chick, because it is a Fire-type and looks like a chick. And since this is a Fire-type, it would have the advantage over Treecko, a Grass-type. Treecko is a combination of tree and gecko. This makes sense because treecko looks like a gecko, likes trees and is a Grass-type. And since fire burns grass, Torchic has the advantage.
The Pokédex is an electronic device that gives information about every Pokémon. In the TV show, you just have to see the Pokémon to get the information, but in the game you have to catch it. There are 493 Pokémon at the moment, and each one has a specific number in the Pokédex. Number 1 is Bulbasaur and Number 493 is Arceus. The whole purpose of the games is to complete your Pokédex with all 493 Pokémon.
