Card text
Smokescreen

If the Defending Pokémon tries to attack during your opponent's next turn, your opponent flips a coin. If tails, that attack does nothing.
Char
やきこがす
30
If the Defending Pokémon doesn't have a Char counter on it, flip a coin. If heads, put a Char counter on it. A Char counter requires your opponent to flip a coin after every turn. If tails, put 2 damage counters on the Pokémon with that Char counter. (Char counters stay on the Pokémon as long as it's in play.)
Be careful if it turns its back during battle. It means that it will attack with the fire on its back.
体をおおう毛皮は、絶対に燃えたりしない。どんな炎こうげきも平気だ。
Trivia
The Char counters placed by Quilava's Charattack can be seen as a precursor for the Burned condition later introduced in the Expedition Base Set. The primary difference between the two as they were introduced are that Char is not a Special Condition, so it remains on a Pokémon even if it moves to the Bench.
With the release of Sun & Moon, Burned was changed. Currently, Burned puts two damage counters on the Pokémon, then causes that Pokémon's owner to flip a coin. Tails results have no effect, but a heads result causes the Pokémon to recover from Burned. This makes Char counters and Burned more distinct.
