Liner notes, I "SCRIIIBE!" (cry sound of Wo-Chien)

Since this game has various stories with various elements, we wanted to increase the flavor of the world with music from wider variety of genres than ever; composing with support from Masuda-san, Toby-san, and many other composers. We asked Toby-san for an Academy theme song, and surprisingly, he gave us a draft where he hummed the melody to his own piano. Director Ohmori and I listened to that and agreed, “We want to make this a track that best represents Pokémon Scarlet & Violet!” Adachi-san then turned it into a field song with her sharp techniques and senses. That’s the Southern Province.

We assigned Team Star music to Taniguchi-san from SuperSweep, who composed many nice tracks for GIGA WRECKER before. One of my favorite traits about his compositions are his strong melodies contain stirring elements; we requested him for compositions like that. We were overjoyed when Battle! Team Star Boss came to life. Maeba-san helped touch many events, with musical direction close to the hearts of the players and characters; listening often relaxed me during the development! As for my work, I had trouble arranging Toby-san’s Area Zero. The draft track for that was so perfect that I felt, "There’s no need to arrange it, is there?" I thought it’d be a waste to change the coolness of his draft centered around the synthesizer, so when looking at the map of Area Zero and seeing it to be a heaven-like place, I arranged it to portray the magnificent ancient nature through [sampling] The Bulgarian Voices Angelite, and the futuristic threats through the synthesizer. My dream of arranging Toby-san’s music came true, and I have no regrets now! —No! I want to do more!

Lastly, the Terarium Dome’s background music contains many musical motifs from the Unova region, so listen to it intently and enjoy! SPLASHYYY! (cry sound)

[translator's note] Wo-Chien’s cry, SCRIIIBE, also fits well in English; though, Chi-Yu’s cry in Japanese is MIYO-MIYOHHH, literally “View, view!”, which is completely different from the English counterpart "SPLASHYYY"; Ichinose used it as "Try, try!" here. Notably, Ichinose was in charge of the Ruinous Pokémon's battle theme.]

[translator's note] The Bulgarian Voices Angelite is an all-female choir from Sofia. Ichinose uses samples of their work for the Area Zero theme, presumably from tracks; Ergen Deda and Listni Se Goro. These samples are Rhodope2 Performance, from Strezov Sampling Rhodope 2: Ethnic Bulgarian Choir.

Hilda OD.pngAdachi:

Among the tracks I worked on for the main story, the most memorable is the interactive background track for the East Province field. That was my first composition for Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, where I went through a lot of trial-and-error. While open-world games often design field tracks as a part of ambient music, our principle for Scarlet & Violet's compositions were to purposely ensure the game plays the melody a way that makes the track memorable.

First of all, we’d compose in full; then we’d align the original track with certain situations — Riding, walking, staying in a small town, battling, etc. By adding and subtracting; we’d also arrange it to ensure consistency during music transitions.

Toby Fox’s excellent music arrived later; after conceptualizing the South Province, we worked on more arrangements in the same way. The music we received was superb, which made the job of arranging super fun. I continued to work on music for the field and the battles in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero; our method of composition being that we’d first compose simple concept melodies for the Loyal Three, Ogerpon, Kitakami, etc., and then arrange them for each in-game use.

Although it’s a Japanese-style arrangement as a whole, the components intermingle with one another: the present day, the rural area in northern Japan, the old tale(s), the overseas culture(s), etc., which featured a wealth of somewhat contradictory elements across some scenes. The composition was tough to tackle. (laughs)

I’d like to thank all the staff members who, despite all this, patiently worked with me on the conceptualization until we reached the right answer. This is the first opportunity in a while where the fans can listen to the music as part of the soundtracks. I’m very grateful to numerous people concerned for their efforts, which gave this chance to me. I’ll be happy if this soundtrack becomes one of the Pokémon world experiences for all fans!

Battle! (Team Star)

My first composition'

Hilbert OD.pngTaniguchi:

At first, I simply began composing with the goal of "a gang with some nasty schemes"; however, my first impression of "a villainous team" transitioned as I understood their background more deeply, including the details of how their team was formed...

My initial submission got OK’d, but later I redesigned it greatly. It had a far lighter tone at first.

Battle! (Team Star Boss)

The car is... a Pokémon?

Hilbert OD.pngTaniguchi:

This impact of seeing this [(the Starmobile)] was a bit shocking; the songwriting process was difficult, I remember walking around in circles. I still can’t listen to this track calmly yet. The boss standing bravely on the odd-shaped Starmobile gave me a sense of how cool it is to stand tall, alone. Also, the guitar by Sorao Mori is essential. I'd like to express my gratitude to him again here, for the unquestionable passion poured in by his play.

Battle! (Cassiopeia)

Let’s go with gabber kicks!

Hilbert OD.pngTaniguchi:

Cassiopeia was determined to disband Team Star of her own volition, which had been the great[est] treasure she established for her ideals. Nevertheless, she must’ve wavered at that point... I wanted her to feel liberated, and had purposely refrained from adding the melody to the final part; but I decided to do so very suddenly, just before the submission.

Lastly, I’m very grateful to Ichinose-san and all other members of the sound and development teams. (On the count of three! One, two…) Hasta la vistar—

Introduction

Red OD.pngToby:

Hello! I'm Toby Fox, the creator of UNDERTALE. This time around I was one of the people who worked on Pokemon Scarlet and Violet as a composer. To my surprise, one of the melodies I wrote played throughout the whole game as field music; I'm very honored! At first I only composed a march-like song to be used in the Academy, but when I was allowed to see the game during development at GAME FREAK somehow that melody became the main theme of the game! Even now I can't believe it... Adachi-san did the arrangements and I wasn't involved in that process at all, but hearing all the different versions playing in game one by one was a surprise like getting a present. (by the way my favorite are the ones that play when walking around)
While we're here I can talk a little bit about the other songs I was in charge of...

Area Zero

Red OD.pngToby:

The original version I wrote of this song was much more peaceful; it had a 'heavenly' feeling to the arrangement. However, the more dynamic version of the song heard in game was arranged by Ichinose-san. Thanks to him the final product's solemn feeling and impact overall has risen. I'm so happy I feel like I'm in heaven~ Thanks Ichinose-san ❤

Battle! (Zero Lab)

Red OD.pngToby:

I was very moved to be allowed to write the final battle theme. The melody was based on the trainer battle theme from Pokemon Red and Green. I wanted everyone to have the same feeling of getting goosebumps that I did when I first heard that song as a kid. By the way, the breathing sound at the end of the song is me. It's by some strange coincidence that I'm writing another theme for a boss with black and blue glowing eyes.

Battle! (Tera Raid)

Red OD.pngToby:

When the melody I wrote for this was used in the currently airing Pocket Monsters anime I was super surprised and unbelievably happy!
