Cause/Fix
SPECULATION: The cause of inverted sprites may originate from Missingno. corrupting Hall of Fame data. Missingno. corrupts data a little bit before and after the Hall of Fame data, so maybe it sets a flag that causes sprites to be flipped. When the stats screen/Pokédex entry of a Pokémon is viewed, the game sets that flag to properly display the flipped Pokémon sprite, and it unsets it (fixes the sprites) when the stats screen is closed.
