Capitalization

Not really familiar with the topic, but why is the title uppercase when the first sentence even sources it's lowercase? (Should the page be moved?) Nescientist (talk) 09:41, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

Masters is really inconsistent with capitalization; they often use title case for terms even when they're not in a title, leading to some confusion about whether those terms should be capitalized on Bulbapedia or not. EX role is most often seen written as EX Role in-game, so that's arguably the more official way to write it. But in an effort to make Bulbapedia more consistent, we (I?) adopted a stance that's along the lines of "if it's been used in lowercase in an official capacity at some point, it should be formatted in lowercase". That was the reasoning behind moving a ton of Masters event pages to new names a while back. I did have a conversation with Boblers about moving this page a couple months ago, but I don't remember why we decided not to move it... Storm Aurora (talk) 05:25, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

When it's consistently used without capital letter when using sentence case (such as in a proper sentence/text), then I'd usually use that even when it's otherwise capitalized when using title case (such as in menus). If it's used consistently lowercase when using sentence case, then I think we should move this. Nescientist (talk) 22:39, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

The problem is that it's not consistently used without a capital letter when using sentence case.

"You can use a Roll Cake to unlock the EX Role for Sync Pairs that have one. Unlocking a Sync Pair's EX Role will boost their stats. Also, when they are raised to 6★ EX, an additional effect will be added to their Sync Move based on their EX Role." - From the in-game help menu

"An EX role is another role hidden within a sync pair. When an EX role is unlocked, it raises the stats and strengthens the effects of a sync pair's sync move when that sync pair has been raised to 6★ EX. You can use roll cakes to unlock EX roles in Unlock EX Roles." - From the EX role tutorial

As you can see, "Roll Cake", "EX Role", "Sync Pair", and "Sync Move" are all capitalized in the first but not in the second... Storm Aurora (talk) 23:18, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Either way, I guess the capitalization in the first sentence should be aligned to the actual page title. Maybe uppercase the R in the first sentence, and also mention in the footnote how it's capitalized inconsistently!? Nescientist (talk) 23:29, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Actually, on further inspection of those two quotes, they are internally consistent - that is, all the Masters-related terms in the first quote have their first letter capitalized, while all the Masters-related terms in the second quote are in normal sentence case. Our pages for sync move and sync pair are formatted as such because those terms are always used in lowercase within in-game dialogue, while EX role has yet to appear within in-game dialogue. But if EX Role is only capitalized when Sync Move and Sync Pair are, and we consistently don't capitalize sync move and sync pair, then I would say that we shouldn't capitalize EX role, either. I'll keep the note about it being capitalized in both ways, but I'm going to move the page to EX role. Storm Aurora (talk) 00:16, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
