Unova first partner Pokemon, otherwise known as Unova starter Pokemon, are Pokemon chosen by Trainers at the start of their journey in Unova. These are traditionally given out by Professor Juniper and are to be used to battle the first wild Pokémon that the Trainer encounters.
In the core series Unova-based games, the player can choose a Fire-, Water-, or Grass-type first partner Pokémon at level 5.

Unova-based games
In Pokémon Black and White, Professor Juniper leaves a gift with the player's Mom in Nuvema Town to give to them. In it is the Unova first partner Pokémon, after the player chooses, the player's friend Cheren will choose the Pokémon that is strong against the player's choice, while the player's other friend Bianca will choose the one weak to the player's choice.
The choice of first partner Pokémon affects which of the Gym Leaders of Striaton City will be battled; players who chose Snivy will face Chili, a Fire-type specialist, players who chose Tepig will face Cress, a Water-type specialist, and players who chose Oshawott will face Cilan, a Grass-type specialist. Also, the choice affects the Pokémon given to the player in the Dreamyard. Choosing Snivy gives the player a Panpour, Tepig a Pansage, and Oshawott a Pansear.
In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Bianca takes three first partner Pokémon to Aspertia City on Professor Juniper's behalf and offers one of them to the player. The player's friend, Hugh, will have the Pokémon that is strong against the player's choice, having raised it from an Egg. The player character not chosen will have the first partner that is weak to the player's choice, but only seen in its second form.
Other games
In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, after the Delta Episode is completed, Professor Birch can be found being chased by a Machoke on Route 101 and the player will be allowed to choose one of the Unova first partners.
In Pokémon Sun and Moon, the Unova first partners' final forms can be caught in the wild via Island Scan on Poni Island.

In the anime
In the main series
In the Unova arc, similar to previous regions, Professor Juniper is in charge of distributing the Unova first partner Pokémon to new Trainers. The first Pokémon she is seen giving to a new Trainer is Snivy who she gives to Ash's rival for the series Trip. The Oshawott that was under her care at the time took an interest in Ash and followed him from the laboratory on the start of his journey through Unova, thinking it was a Wild, Ash tried to capture it and it failed as it was already owned by Professor Juniper. After getting her permission she allowed Ash to become Oshawott's new Trainer. Further on in the series it was revealed that Bianca had taken Pignite as her first partner, and as Ash was concluding his journey through Unova, Professor Juniper gave another Tepig to a trainer named Nanette.
In the manga
Pokémon Adventures
In Pokémon Adventures, there are two sets of first partner Pokémon featured. The first distributed by Professor Juniper, she sends their Poké Balls to Black who selects Tepig and his friends Bianca selects Oshawott, while Cheren selects Snivy. Profesor Juniper's father, Cedric Juniper, also hands out partner Pokémon to new Trainer's however prior to the story N broke into the lab and released them from their Pokéballs intending to liberate them. This plan only partially worked though as Oshawott chose to stay with the professor, Snivy stayed with N, and Tepig ran away only to be found by White.
Pokémon Pocket Monsters
In Pokémon Pocket Monsters, Professor Juniper appears to hand out the Unova first partner Pokémon. Black, Cheren and Bianca show up to select their new partners, however their choices aren't shown.
Trivia
- The Oshawott line is the only Unova first partner Pokémon to have a regional form.
