Some color changes for the future

For some time, the colors for Red, Green, and Blue have been a bit of a strain eyes due to how saturated they are. In the near future, the color scheme for these three will be changed to be easier for people to look at when reading various pages.

Current colors used:

Red color light E77E66 {{Red color light}}
Red color DA3914 {{Red color}}
Red color dark 8E250D {{Red color dark}}
Green color light 71C671 {{Green color light}}
Green color 24A724 {{Green color}}
Green color dark 176D17 {{Green color dark}}
Blue color light 778DE6 {{Blue color light}}
Blue color 2E50D8 {{Blue color}}
Blue color dark 1E348C {{Blue color dark}}

New proposed colors to make reading of various templates and galleries easier:

  Light Blue - 768de5
  Blue - 2e50d8
  Dark Blue - 1d348c

  Light Green - 70c670
  Green - 24a724
  Dark Green - 176d17

  Light Red - ef737d
  Red - e72838
  Dark Red - 961a24

If anyone has other suggestions, I am open to them.

Also, any other core series game colors needing changes should be proposed here to help keep track of everything easier. Thank you~ Frozen Fennec 03:58, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

This sounds good, theres a few other colour templates that I would like to bring forth for consideration and input:
  • Type colours: currently theses are based on Gen 3 games (with Fairy being its own invention); these dont really line up to the modern game very well as such I would suggest we change them to be in line with what is used in Scarlet and Violet. What this would look like can be seen here.
  • Stat colours are currently based on our type colours, these could be adjusted to use the mint/feather colours
  • TCG: I would suggest a few changes here:
    • {{TCG Supporter color}} I would change from red to orange, to better match the ingame cards (fellow EP wikis 52 pokéwiki and WikiDex also use orange)
    • {{Tcg fighting color}} Since the proposed change would likely clash with the fighing colour, I would make this more brown (also to better match the colour on the cards)
    • {{Tcg darkness color}} We have issues with this template because of how dark it is, it contrasts poorly with text, can be lighened up and be given a blue tint as on the cards.
    • {{TCG ACE SPEC color}} This template was recently created, and is functionally unused, it also doesnt follow the criteria for what we normally would make a TCG color template for, as such I would delete/archive it.
  • FR/LG colours could also get an update to be less saturated
  • Colours for the DLC expansions would be a good addition (Isle of Armour / Crown Tundra / Teal Mask / Indigo Disk) would be a welcome addition.
Think I got everything, if anyone has other colours feel free to add. 4iamking 08:00, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
Just to mention, {{Tcg metal color}} has come up as another colour to reevaluate (currently quite brown comparted to what it should be), I think a general evaluation of all TCG colours is in order. 4iamking 16:02, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
Desaturating these colours seems like a very good idea; especially the "blue color", which can be very jarring. A general review of our colours to see if they still match the current ones used by TPC would be a good idea, as 4iamking mentioned. I also agree that we should have proper colour templates for the DLC, rather than reusing other colour templates. - bthrussellUK (talk) 09:25, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
One other thing I wanted to highlight is just general consistancy in names as well, the fact that we capitalize the names of some TCG templates and others not makes them somewhat confusing to use. 4iamking 10:39, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
I support the updates to the RGB and type colors. Landfish7 18:35, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
RGB colors have been updated. Type colors, and TCG colors above, if possible, will be taking care of in the days ahead when I can. One think I would like to add as being looked at is the Physical Attack colors since they seem to run into similar issues as Red with the Red and Orange color combo being a bit of an eye strain honestly. Any suggestions on how to improve them? Frozen Fennec 06:40, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
For Physical Attack, I don't think there is any need for the text colour to be orange. It should be white to ensure there is enough contrast and maintain readability. - bthrussellUK (talk) 07:59, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

Alternative scheme below, based from colours in XY, which coincidentally were the only mainline game to assign colours to the stats. Given that the ingame colours are very chalky, I used the game colours for the light colour, to base the midtone and dark colour off of, I think this scheme works really well with our templates as well. 4iamking 21:54, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

The games have had persistent stat colors since Gen III. glikglak 11:06, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
No, if you base the decision off stat boosting items, the colour palette you end up with will be all over the place depending on what set of items you choose: I feel your already making one proxy collection just linking a stat to an item, but the lack of consistancy makes this evident. 4iamking 11:11, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
Vitamins' colors? I don't like them because Defense and Sp. Def would be both represented by green in this case. --C.Ezra.M (talk | contribs) 11:14, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
I agree its 2 reds (or well a red+orange), 2 blues; 2 greens in that case, the other green being SPE not SPD. The other thing to keep in mind is items are known for their sprites not changing after the item is introduced and they dont always match, when we know the colour... I.e. the Draco Plate is red despite the type more being associated with deep blues and occasionally yellow-gold as in the TCG. Finally just if anyone wanted to see it, heres the two proposed schemes in action. 4iamking 11:57, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
A chart featuring every instance the franchise associated stats with colors. [2]
We were using this on Discord. There is no right answer here, but I believe basing our colors off of mints and feathers is more right than the rest. Feathers have been using the colors since Gen V, and GF made a conscious decision to model the mints after them in SwSh, when they could have just continued using the LGPE colors. There are now two VGC-hosting mainline games that have two sets of stat boosting items (nature changing is stat boost) that align in color. Mints have become frequently used, so it's fair to say users would have an easier time associating their colors with the stats than the darkened versions of a few pixels from an 11-year-old game. In short, the feather/mint colors are official, recent, current, and consistent. There are further issues with using the XY colors other than the fact that they were abandoned by the next game in the same generation: it's the only time Attack is yellow, Sp. Defense is blue and Speed is purple. The mints and feathers use colors that have been used elsewhere, with the exception of Sp. Defense, which is just all over the place, but Attack, Defense, Sp. Attack and Speed all use colors that have been assigned to them prior in the series. Oneofthosedf (talk) (contribs) 12:36, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

(resetting indent)You've mixed up the vitamin colors there. And I should've clarified, I was referring to the caps of the vitamins, they're the much more prominent color on their sprites and are actually distinct. glikglak 12:56, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

I still don't want the vitamin cap colors because the Sp. Atk and Sp. Def colors would be just very similar shades of orange. --C.Ezra.M (talk | contribs) 13:01, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
That's orange and light brown. And saturation adjustments have to happen regardless. glikglak 13:09, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
Changing gears a bit, the game mechanic that is HP has always been green. glikglak 13:30, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
Just to bring the current developments from the Discord chat to the wiki, the XY colours are also used in Masters EX to reprent the stats themselves on stat screens and thus can be directly attributed to the stat itself rather than just being the colour of an item that affects the stats in some way. I think right now this palette is the front running solution though it can still be tweaked based on feedback and testing in real use situations. 4iamking 17:50, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
Added the palette using XY colours as midtones colours for comparison sake, use cases would need to be checked but I do not believe it to be advisable. 4iamking 01:02, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
What was the reasoning behind changing them in the first place? The new colors are kinda jarring (and a bit garish on fire type pages specifically, they clash really bad with the (also newish) red) considering how long the old colors were in use, regardless of how arbitrary they may have been. Stat colors used in one game from several generations ago are barely less arbitrary than what's been in use for years, though. Inco (talk) 08:11, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
The stat colours are also appearing in the current generation in Masters EX, and are they only colours they have been officially associated with in a way that doesnt involve making a proxy connection (like associating to a stat affecting item). Additionally this change puts us in line with the majority of other Encyclopædiæ Pokémonis wiki's who have used the official colours long before us. 4iamking 13:23, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

Changed the text color so you can see how it interacts with the backgrounds. The Physical textcolor template is a big improvement on what we have currently. However the readability of Special color light and the textcolor may be challenging. - bthrussellUK (talk) 19:03, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
Changing the Special and Status text colors isn't really a big deal. We can make them brighter and nobody would even notice they are different from the games thanks to the limits of how our eyes perceive thin lines inside chunks of solid color.

The light and dark colors need alteration because they were taken from the game as is rather than being determined by our method, which causes issues, such as light and mid colors being almost idential or light and dark colors being totally different.

I've added in the current middle colors to make it easier to see how the new colors work. I think these are all positive changes, and are an improvement on what we currently have. - bthrussellUK (talk) 18:50, 29 February 2024 (UTC)

Egg group colors

Time to make proper egg group color templates with light and dark variants, the hex codes of which are used on the individual pages already. This would also allow us to use the colors in infoboxes, the Poké Maniac page is a good candidate. I suggest using the word "egg" for all of these templates as to differentiate between the five egg groups that are also types (Dragon, Bug, Grass, Fairy, Flying). The few templates that use these colors, like the move entry templates, would only need to have the word "egg" added twice in the right positions. Doing this will allow us to tweak the colors (since they are fan made) or change them if they ever get official ones.

The suggestion consists of several moves, color changes, and creation of new templates, but it's been a long time coming. It's all very reasonable.

New TCG colors

More from Discord. Color revamp similar to the main types. Type colors are taken from page 4 of this: https://www.pokemon.com/static-assets/content-assets/cms2/pdf/trading-card-game/rulebook/par_rulebook_en.pdf

Metal is a darkened version of the icon from page 3 of this https://www.pokemon.com/static-assets/content-assets/cms2/pdf/trading-card-game/tcg-alternative-play-handbook-en.pdf

Item, Tool, and Supporter are color picked from the cards' text, Stadium was lightened not to cause confusion with TCG Grass.

TCG Ability takes the old color of TCG Supporter, it's very similar in color to TCG Fire, but the two colors won't interact.

Just to add, {{Tcg colorless color}} would not change and stay as it currently is, if we used the colours from the sources above we would derive at something that is even closer to white than the current template, and therefore this is not desired. Otherwise I wanted to say (though as an involved party) that I support these changes. 4iamking 00:02, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

I have come around over {{Tcg colorless color}} and added it to the list, like metal colour using the darker shade from the alternative play guide. I also updated the light/dark in DF's post based on our formula. I added both considered Metal and Colourless options above for comparison sake, if we wanted consistancy we would use rulebook colours but the alternative play manual colours do provide slightly better contrast in certain situations. 4iamking 22:10, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

Oki slight update, added the rest of the alternative play colours, I would recommend using these as they do match the card checklists. With these colours I think the colour differentiation between grass and the regular stadium colour is enough that we dont need to do any modifications to the stadium colour, as such I would recommending using the origional colour from the card, which I also left above. 4iamking 01:01, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

Contest colors

Contest ribbon colors

I found some ribbon colors that have been used since 2011, but after all this time, they don't have templates. We may have to change that in the future. ThunderBrine (talk) 23:38, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

From ORAS. Oneofthosedf (talk) (contribs) 01:19, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

these are based on ORAS, but I think BDSP colours would be better. The other thing with these is the naming needs to be considered, both for this and the condition pages themselves, since it changes in every game. Right now the Clever and Beautiful colour templates need to be moved to match the page. The current colours from gen 6 name the conditions as adjectives, whereas in gen 8 its as a verb (cool vs coolness as an example). 4iamking 17:55, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

This would be the BDSP colours but im going to preface this by saying its an approximation, as we do not have the assets on the wiki, they probably are a few points off on the colourwheel from the actual game assets. For {{Contest color}}, to give it some differentiation I have two proposals both sourced from BDSP, the first is the background colour of the contest tab in a pokémon's summary screen, the second one is the colour used to highlight the Sheen mechanic, which retains its purple colour from earlier generations. 4iamking 22:51, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
Want to add that in addition to these moves I would also suggest we fold Battle frontier colours and Pokéthlon stat colours into these, since they pull from the same coloursheet and it will allow us to reduce or dependance on redundant templates for gimmicks that appeared in 1-2 games. 4iamking 16:45, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

Ruby and Sapphire color proposal

While this project for color updates began with a desire to update Red, Green, and Blue; I have recently come to notice another set of games needing their colors updated as it can make links or text a bit hard to read at times.

Current Ruby colors:
  Ruby color light - C15959
  Ruby color - A00000
  Ruby color dark - 680000

Proposed Ruby colors (pulled from JP boxart):
  Ruby color light - E67587
  Ruby color - D82B47
  Ruby color dark - 8C1C2E

Current Sapphire colors:
  Sapphire color light - 5959C1
  Sapphire color - 0000A0
  Sapphire color dark - 000068

Proposed Sapphire colors (pulled from JP boxart):
  Sapphire color light - 858CBD
  Sapphire color - 434E99
  Sapphire color dark - 2C3363

Would love to get feedback on the proposed colors and if there might be a better color set to use for these two games. I have no proposed colors for Emerald since it does not seem to have readability issues. Frozen Fennec 04:23, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

While Emerald doesn't have readability issues, it's awfully similar to the color for Pokémon Green Version, so either changing Emerald to make it more distinct from Green, or changing Green to make it more distinct from Emerald, might not be a bad idea. Landfish7 11:29, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
I think we can wait with Emerald until we know what color we're gonna use for LZA to make sure all the greens are distinct enough. Oneofthosedf (talk) (contribs) 11:34, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
  Ruby color light - DF6F7C
  Ruby color - CD2236
  Ruby color dark - 851623
  Sapphire color light - 818FC6
  Sapphire color - 3D51A7
  Sapphire color dark - 28356D
  Emerald color light - 59BB8F
  Emerald color - 009652
  Emerald color dark - 006235
Im just gonna post my proposal (sourced from japanese logos), I think they work well and Tested for contrast against both white and black text, all fall within the range of 2.9-7.16 so I forsee no issues here. against other game templates the only similarity really is Sapphire against Shadows of Almia colour but given thats a spinoff and not generally put next to each other I think thats fine. otherwise I think this is my recomendation. 4iamking 23:43, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

New colors for the Gen IV games

The original colors we used didn't really have anything to do with the actual games, these are more representative and still distinct. Platinum is actually very often depcited as being gold (in the game, in the TCG, as its game icon, JP logo), but after a lengthy Discord discussion, we ultimately decided to not use gold as to not be confusing. It is a custom color set, but so was the former one. It fits the game and its name better, while not being a radical leap from what users are used to. These new colors were received with unanimous acceptance on Discord, I'm sure users here will enjoy the changes as well. Oneofthosedf (talk) (contribs) 01:07, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

Proposed HeartGold colors (pulled from JP boxart):

Current SoulSiver colors:
  SoulSiver color light - D6D6EB
  SoulSiver color - C0C0E1
  SoulSiver color dark - 7D7D92

Proposed SoulSiver colors (pulled from JP boxart):
  SoulSiver color light - C7D1DF
  SoulSiver color - AAB9CF
  SoulSiver color dark - 6E7886

These colour changes are now implemented (with the light and dark colours slightly corrected to adjust to our standard). On a personal level, I do feel Platinum is a bit of a missed oppertunity here as I feel we are basicially saying we prefer gray (In my opinion subjectively) and are willing to make an exception for that game and pick a colour that has a different source from the others to meet that need. In my opinion somewhat undermining the purpose of the main goal of the colour overhaul which is to standardise to official sources, and the sources we would use to pick the D/P colours would all suggest platinum be a gold with greyish undertones, similar to the old heart gold colour we used to have (and is also used by our sister Chinese language wiki). Anyway I realise that there are strong feelings attached to that colour and the concensus was not there, but I do feel it important to note what occured with the disccusion, should it ever come up again in the future. 4iamking 15:47, 28 April 2024 (UTC)
