List of mutually exclusive Pokémon

From Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia.
Jump to navigationJump to search

This is a list of mutually exclusive Pokémon in the games.

In some cases, there are multiple Pokémon potentially available in a single game, but the player must choose one of them or otherwise can't catch all of them in a single game. They include many trios of first partner Pokémon, some Fossil Pokémon, and in some cases Legendary Pokémon.

In the core series games

Generation I

Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow

First partner Pokémon and their evolutions

In Pokémon Red and Blue, the first partner Pokémon and their evolutions form a group of nine mutually exclusive Pokémon. For instance, if the player chooses Bulbasaur, then Charmander and Squirtle will be unobtainable outside of trades. Once this Bulbasaur evolves into Ivysaur, it will not be possible to obtain any other Bulbasaur in the same game due to the lack of breeding.

In Pokémon Yellow, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle are available without trading. However, they still form three groups of mutually exclusive Pokémon, since it is once again not possible to own multiple evolutionary stages (such as Charmander, Charmeleon, and Charizard) at the same time outside of trades.

Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan

In Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, the player chooses to receive either Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan from the master of the Fighting Dojo. The other is available via trades from other Generation I or II games. It is not possible to own the other Pokémon outside of trades due to the lack of breeding in this generation.

Eevee and Eeveelutions

In this generation, Eevee and the Eeveelutions form a group of four mutually exclusive Pokémon.

There is a single Eevee available in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow. Therefore, outside of trades, Eevee itself becomes unavailable by any means once this one evolves, and it is not possible to own more than one Eeveelution in the same game. This is a result of the lack of breeding in this generation.

Omanyte, Kabuto, and their evolutions

In this generation, Omanyte, Kabuto, and their evolutions form a group of four mutually exclusive Pokémon.

The player chooses either the Helix Fossil or Dome Fossil at the Mt. Moon, from which Omanyte or Kabuto is revived, respectively. Pokémon from the other, not chosen fossil appears in Pokémon Zoo of Fuchsia City.

It is not possible to own multiple Pokémon stages from the same evolutionary line (such as both Omanyte and Omastar; or both Kabuto and Kabutops) at the same time outside of trades due to the lack of breeding in this generation.

Sinjoh Ruins

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player is able to receive an Egg with a level 1 Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina in the Sinjoh Ruins event. This place is only accessible if the player has an Arceus from Pokémon Diamond, Pearl or Pokémon Platinum.

If the player has an Arceus from the Hall of Origin (which is only obtainable through cheating or use of the Pal Park Retire glitch) and another Arceus from other event distributions, it's possible to receive 2 Eggs with Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina. It's not possible to receive 2 Eggs with the same Pokémon species in this way.

This is the only way to obtain a legitimate Griseous Orb in these games.

The Crown Tundra

Glastrier, Spectrier, and Calyrex's forms

In The Crown Tundra, while helping Calyrex find its steed, the player has the choice of growing either an Iceroot Carrot or a Shaderoot Carrot to lure it out. This choice determines the identity of Calyrex's steed, either Glastrier or Spectrier, and the form Calyrex takes when the player ultimately battles it. When Calyrex is caught in its Ice Rider form, they will also catch Glastrier, while they will catch Spectrier with Calyrex if it is in its Shadow Rider form.

Fire Stone evolutions

In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, there are at most two Fire Stones available in the game (excluding any that may be traded in), but three Pokémon that can evolve via Fire Stone: Vulpix, Growlithe, and Eevee. This restricts the player to obtaining at most two of Ninetales, Arcanine and Flareon.

One Fire Stone is located on the S.S. Libra. The other is available at Gateon Port, where the player has to choose one of the following mutually-exclusive items: Fire Stone, Water Stone, Thunder Stone, Sun Shard, Moon Shard. Selecting the Fire Stone at Gateon Port limits the player's access to the other Evolution items, making one of the Fire Stone evolutions also mutually exclusive with other evolutions that require these Evolution items if there are not a sufficient number of those items available for the number of Pokémon that can use them to evolve in the game; in particular, Gateon Port is the only way to obtain the Sun Shard and Moon Shard.
