Active Pokémon Dens can have a weak, red pillar of light or a strong, purple pillar of light. Dens with a purple pillar are rarer and may contain Pokémon from the "rare pools" below, while those with a red pillar may contain Pokémon from the "common pools".

If Wild Area News is active, any den may select Pokémon from its pool instead; if this happens, the den activates with a red pillar of light just like the den's common pool.
