Red's Coin Case, from Generation III

A Coin (Japanese: コイン Coin) is a type of currency used at Game Corners in the core series games.

In the core series games

Coins are used to play the games available at the various Game Corners around the Pokémon world. They can also be exchanged for prizes, including rare items, TMs, and even Pokémon. Coins cannot be obtained until the player has a Coin Case in their Bag.

Coins can be bought in amounts of 50 for $1000 or, starting in Generation II, in increments of 500 for $10000. They can also be found in game machines in the European versions of Platinum and Korean versions of the Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum Versions. The player cannot buy Coins in the Korean and western releases of HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Dropped Coins can be found on the floor of the Game Corner in certain games and can be collected by the player. In most cases, dozens of Coins are found just by searching the floor. Using the Itemfinder can help with locating these Coins. Several people may give the player free Coins, normally ten or twenty at a time. This is useful if the player wishes to start playing without having to buy any Coins.

Trivia

  • In the Generation I games, Coins are stored as individual items (index number 59, hex: 3B) in the game. It may be of note that when forced into a Poké Mart, they are available for purchase at the price of $10 per Coin. This is half the price of Coins in the final versions of the games. When forced as items, Coins cannot be used by the player, nor can they be stored back into a Coin Case.
