Judgment (Japanese: さばきのつぶて Judgment Pebble) is a damage-dealing Normal-type move introduced in Generation IV. It is the signature move of Arceus and varies in type depending on the Plate held by the user.

Effect

Judgment inflicts damage and has no secondary effect. The type of Judgment depends on the type of Plate held by the user, being Normal-type if there is no held Plate.

Generation IV

Judgment is affected by Normalize.

Generation V

Judgment is unaffected by Normalize.

Generations VI and VII

If Magic Room is in effect, Judgment's type will always be Normal regardless of the Plate held.

Judgment is unaffected by Normalize, Pixilate, Refrigerate, and Aerilate. However, it is affected by Ion Deluge (if the move would be Normal-type) and Electrify.

Generation VII

Judgment's type is unaffected by Z-Crystals held by the user, remaining a Normal-type move.

Generation VIII

Judgment cannot be selected in a battle in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Judgment PP was reduced to 5. Judgment's type is now determined by which Plate Arceus last interacted with, and thus the move will match Arceus's current type. When used by another Pokémon through Mimic, Judgment will always be Normal-type regardless of what type it was when copied by Mimic. Unlike in other games, Judgment's animation is slightly different depending on which of the eighteen types it is currently using.

The move's function drastically changes if the last plate Arceus interacted with is the Legend Plate. In battle, Arceus gains the ability to change type when using Judgment, based on the selected opponent's type. While selecting a move, Judgment displays the type that it will become against the selected opponent, if used that turn. This is similar to Unown's signature move Hidden Power.

  • Judgment will become a type that is super effective against the target, prioritizing any double weaknesses of dual-type targets.
  • If multiple types are equally effective, Judgment will change to a type that best resists the target's primary type, prioritizing immunities, regardless of what the target's secondary type may be.
    • Since Palkia’s primary type is Water, Judgment will always become Dragon. Since Giratina’s primary type is Ghost, Judgment will always become Dark. Although Fairy is immune to their secondary Dragon typing, it does not resist Water or Ghost.
  • If multiple types are still equally valid, Judgment will change to the type that best resists the target's secondary type, if any. Otherwise one type is chosen at random.

This calculation is done on each turn, so if there are multiple valid types, Judgment's type may vary between them each turn.

At the start of battle Arceus will be a Normal type. Upon using Judgment, Arceus will first transform into whatever type Judgment has chosen, and then use the move. This means Judgment will always receive a same-type attack bonus. Arceus will transform even if Judgment misses the opponent. Arceus will not transform however, if the move could not be executed due to its paralysis or drowsy status condition. Arceus will also revert back into a Normal type at the end of battle.

Generation IX

Since Judgment's type only depends on the held Plate, its type will not be changed if the user Terastallizes into a type different to the Plate's type.

Reason: Does it have name and description in the Japanese version of Explorers?

While neither Arceus nor Judgment are legitimately obtainable prior to WiiWare games, the move still exists in Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky data—it has no description, and its name is $$$, however. It is a move with base power of 20, 7PP and 80% accuracy. The user targets all enemies in the room, and since Plates do not exist, it instead uses the user's primary type.

In the WiiWare games, Judgment's type depends on the version of the game played. In Keep Going! Blazing Adventure Squad, it is a Fire-type move; in Let's Go! Stormy Adventure Squad, it is a Water-type move; and in Go For It! Light Adventure Squad, it is an Electric-type move. This is due to the absence of Plates and to the fact that Arceus instead takes the type represented by each version.

The move is unobtainable and has only dummy data in Gates to Infinity as Arceus does not appear in the game.

In Super Mystery Dungeon, Judgment deals damage as if it were the same type as the user. Again due to the absence of Plates, this will almost always be Normal-type damage. However, Judgment will change to Water-type if the user's type is changed with Soak (but not if a type is added to the user due to Forest's Curse or Trick-or-Treat).
