Tad is a confident {{pkmn|Trainer}}, and priorPrior to ''Charizard Chills'', heTad had competed against [[Trovita Island]] [[Gym Leader]]'s [[Rudy]] and won his local townhometown's most powerful Pokémon competition. In{{Ash}} and {{pkmnashfr}} met Tad after he almost ran them over with his boat, causing {{an|battleMisty}} to yell at him. Tad apologized and instantly recognized Ash, following Rudy's comments on his strength. At Tad's request, he usesand theAsh elementcompeted ofin surprisea two-on-two battle. Tad sent out his {{p|Poliwrath}}, and ismanaged notto concerneddefeat withboth [[typeAsh's Pikachu]] matchupsand {{AP|Charizard}}, the latter instance being only because Charizard refused to listen to Ash. He then told Ash that he would accept a [[rematch]] with him when he learned how to train his Charizard.

The next day, Pikachu was stolen by {{TRT}}. With Charizard now trusting him after the lengths he had gone to while trying to help him, Ash successfully rescued Pikachu. Tad, seeing what happened, asked Ash if he was ready for the rematch. Ash accepted, and was able to defeat Tad's Poliwrath with Charizard, thanks to knocking Poliwrath off its feet and subsequently used its trademark {{m|Seismic Toss}} attack.
 
Tad told Ash that he hoped to meet him in the [[Orange League]], but he has not been seen since. However, he made a cameo appearance in a flashback in ''[[BW116|The Fires of a Red-Hot Reunion!]]'', when Ash remembered the time he battled Tad with his Charizard.

The next day, it had a rematch against Ash's now controlled Charizard, who finally knocked Poliwrath out with its {{m|Seismic Toss}}.
 
It reappeared in a flashback in ''[[BW116|The Fires of a Red-Hot Reunion!]]'', when Ash remembered the time when Charizard battled Poliwrath and got frozen, and also when Charizard had athe rematch.
