Mesprit (Japanese: エムリット Emrit) is a Psychic-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Along with Uxie and Azelf, Mesprit is a member of the lake guardians, a Legendary trio first discovered in the Sinnoh region. Mesprit is known as the Being of Emotion (Japanese: 感情(かんじょう)(かみ) God of Emotion).

Biology

Mesprit is a small, gray, fairy-like Pokémon. It has two tails that each have a red jewel encrusted in them. Mesprit has a partially magenta face with four long, drooping appendages and another red gem encrusted in its forehead.

Mesprit's spirit can leave its body without dying and return to the body at will. Legends say that a person that touches it will have their emotions completely drained away. Mesprit was highly feared due to it punishing those who disrespect it; Mesprit will throw their emotions into disarray. Mesprit is said to have taught humans the ability to feel sorrow, pain, and joy. It was shown in The Needs of the Three! and The Battle Finale of Legend! that it can teleport itself, as well as other Pokémon and humans. Though playful, it is a bit mischievous. In the past, it has been referred to as the "Being of Emotion" due to its role in giving humans the ability to feel happiness and sadness present in life. Alongside the other lake guardians, Mesprit is needed for the creation of a Red Chain. Either through gems extracted from its body or through its plume. Together they're also capable of destroying a Red Chain. They even have the power to calm down Dialga and Palkia should the deities be enraged, but not both at once. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Mesprit is shown to be capable of speaking the human language via telepathy.

Mesprit and the other lake guardians are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Mystical Power.

Game data

NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness: Mesprit is the guardian of the Time Gear of Quicksand Cave. When the player and the partner first reach the cave, Mesprit attacks them, having been warned by Uxie about someone aiming to steal the Time Gear, which is soon after stolen by Grovyle. After Grovyle's capture, Mesprit returns the Time Gear to Underground Lake, but when it is revealed that Grovyle was only collecting the Time Gears to prevent the collapse of Temporal Tower, Mesprit willingly hands over the Time Gear instead. Although Mesprit's gender is unknown gameplay-wise, she is referred to as female during cutscenes. After clearing the main story, returning and completing Quicksand Cave gives the player to option to defeat and recruit Mesprit.
  • Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon: The same Mesprit returns, having taken up residence at Heart Lake. Aside from Uxie and Azelf, Mesprit is also connected with Grovyle.

However, they were also captured by J and Team Galactic, but beforehand, they used Future Sight, destroying her ship later on. It was then controlled by the team to help fulfill its goal. In The Battle Finale of Legend!, after breaking from their control with the help of Dawn's Piplup and Cynthia's Garchomp, it helped stop Cyrus's plot to use Dialga and Palkia. It reappeared in Pokémon: The Arceus Chronicles, helping to stop a rampaging Heatran.

Trophy information

An Emotion Pokémon said to have taught humans emotions. Rumor is, if you touch Mesprit, you'll lose all emotions three days later. It sleeps at the base of Lake Verity, but once engaged in battle, it will rise from the water to fly around the Sinnoh region. Even if you see this Pokémon after your initial meeting, it'll try to flee battle, so catching it is quite a task.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Mesprit appears as a Spirit alongside Uxie and Azelf.

Trivia

  • Mesprit is somewhat unique among the members of its trio, as it leaves Lake Verity and begins roaming Sinnoh after being encountered by the player in Lake Verity's cavern.
    • In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky, Mesprit is the only one of the lake guardians to fight the main character in battle during the main story; despite being depicted as a calm and peaceful Pokémon, it was enraged by a previous attack on its counterpart Uxie and quite fiercely attacked the hero and their partner.
  • Mesprit shares its category with Kirlia and Indeedee. They are all known as the Emotion Pokémon.
  • Mesprit is tied with Uxie and Azelf for the highest base friendship of all Legendary Pokémon.
  • In Generation IX, prior to the Version 2.0.1 update of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Mesprit was unable to learn moves via Move Reminder.

Origin

Mesprit seems to be based on a spirit or a sprite. The lake guardians could possibly have originated from the Imperial Regalia of Japan, which are also called the Three Sacred Treasures. Mesprit would be the Yasakani no Magatama, which embodies benevolence. Additionally, it may draw inspiration from Seraphim—one of the three highest ranking angel classes in Christianity—characterized by their "burning love to God."

Name origin

Mesprit may be a combination of M of the acronym UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animal, wasei-eigo for cryptid) and spirit or sprite. It may also involve esprit (liveliness of mind or spirit, and French for 'spirit') or the pronoun me.

Emrit may be a combination of M of the acronym UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animal, wasei-eigo for cryptid) and spirit.
