List of color palettes by index number in Generation I
This is a list of color palettes by index number in Generation I core series games.
Color formats
In Generation I core series games, all palettes have four colors, numbered from 0 to 3. In the monochrome Game Boy systems, they are equivalent to white, light gray, dark gray, and black.
15-bit RGB
| Color example (water tiles) | |
|---|---|
| Red: 20 (10100) Green: 26 (11010) Blue: 31 (11111) | |
| 1st byte | 2nd byte |
| GGGRRRRR | XBBBBBGG |
| 01010100 | 01111111 |
| 54 | 7F |
The Super Game Boy and Game Boy Color use the 15-bit RGB format, with 5 bits (a value from 0 to 31) for each color: red, green, and blue.
For instance, the blue color used by water tiles in Pokémon Red and Blue is represented as "20 26 31" (red, green, and blue, respectively). This is stored in the game data as "547F".
These are the steps to convert from "20 26 31" into "547F":
- The color values are packed in reverse order (blue, green, and red): "31 26 20".
- Convert them to binary and add a single 0 (an unused bit) at the start: "0 11111 11010 10100". This is a 15-bit color stored in a 16-bit (2 bytes) space, equivalent to "01111111 01010100".
- Convert them to hexadecimal: "7F54". This is stored in little-endian format (the two bytes are reversed): "547F".
24-bit RGB
The colors shown here have also been converted to the 24-bit RGB format, with 8 bits (a value from 0 to 255; from 0x00 to 0xFF) for each color.
For example, in the Pokémon game data, the blue color used by water tiles in Pokémon Red and Blue is represented as "20 26 31" in 15-bit RGB. This color is also known as "#A5D6FF" in 24-bit RGB, but this value is produced by converting the original 15-bit color and is not stored directly in the games. Some sources (including official websites, fansites, and sprite editing tools) may have slightly different 24-bit RGB values for retro game sprites.

| This section is missing one or more images. Please feel free to add any missing images to this section. Needed images can be uploaded to the Bulbagarden Archives. Reason: Add image examples of all palettes |
The same white (color 0) and black (color 3) is equally shared by almost all palettes of each game. Exceptionally, different colors replace black in the logos and text found in the title screen. In Pokémon Yellow, slightly different shades of black are used for the Town Map palette.

This palette includes orange and purple in early games. They are replaced by yellow and red in Pokémon Yellow, possibly a reference to Pikachu.
It is used by:
- All non-player characters in battle, usually causing them to appear with orange or yellow skin depending on the game.
- The front and back sprites of Jynx, Mewtwo, and Mew.
- All the small Pokémon icons in the party, nickname, and trade screens.
- The player Red and all Pokémon such as Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Caterpie, Weedle, and so on, in the title screen.
- Professor Oak, Red, Blue, NidorinoRGB and PikachuY in the new game cutscene.
- Red, all Gym Leaders, the numbers from 1 to 8, and the border graphics on the Trainer Card.
- The Boulder Badge and the top-left corner of the Rainbow Badge on the Trainer Card.
- The diploma.

Overworld palettes

In the overworld, each area has its own palette, which is applied to the entire screen. When the player moves from one area to another, the palette changes automatically. The buildings have the same color palette indoors as the surrounding area outdoors. All areas except caves share the same value for color 2, a shade of blue most notably used by bodies of water, as well as a complimentary color used in several places such as building walls, signposts, entrance carpets, trash cans, and wall posters.
The overworld sprites that are not part of the background, such as people, Pokémon, item balls, boulders, cuttable trees, and fossils are not individually assigned colors but instead use the same palette as the current area. These sprites have up to three visible colors: black, white, and the color 1 of the current area. The color 2 is used for transparency instead.

As seen in Seafoam Islands and Cerulean Cave, the water is either greenRGB or brownY inside a cave, as opposed to the light blue water found in other areas. However, in grayscale systems, all bodies of water share the same dark gray color (color ID 2) regardless of the area.

In all Generation I games on the Super Game Boy, the Town Map represents sea, land, and routes with the colors blue, green, and white, respectively, except sea routes are represented by black dots on the water.
In Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue, the shade of blue "20 26 31" is equally used for water on the Town Map and in the overworld (except in caves). However, in monochrome systems, water is light gray (color 1) on the Town Map but dark gray (color 2) in the overworld. This is a result of using two different IDs for the same color.
In Pokémon Yellow on the Super Game Boy, although the Town Map palette still retains the default white "31 31 30" that is used by all other palettes, this is the only palette to include all the other colors, and specifically the black "3 2 2", from earlier games. Although the Town Map still uses the same shade of blue for water as in earlier games, water tiles in the overworld now use the subtly different "23 27 31" instead.
In Pokémon Yellow on the Game Boy Color, water is darker on the Town Map than in the overworld (the former uses blue "0 21 31"; the latter uses blue "11 23 31"). In this game system, the Town Map is the only palette to use black "1 1 1", which is darker than other options of black available in Generation I games.

Pokémon palettes
- Main article: List of Pokémon by color palette in Generation I
These palettes are used for the Pokémon sprites (front and back versions), as seen in battles, trades, Hall of Fame, the summary, and Pokédex entries. The generic palette (a palette available for several other things besides Pokémon species) is specifically used for Jynx, Mewtwo, and Mew.
If a Pokémon changes its species by using Transform, it remains with its original palette. This includes Transform called by Mimic, Mirror Move, or Metronome. For instance, Ditto uses the gray Pokémon palette in this generation, and it is able to transform into a gray version of any Pokémon. Alternatively, if Charmander (a red Pokémon) learns Transform via Mimic and then transforms into Bulbasaur, the result would be a red Bulbasaur.
The battle HUD uses the color palette of the player's Pokémon (such as the green Pokémon palette if the player is using Bulbasaur), but this is not normally visible because the HUD only uses black and white by default. Some moves such as Hyper Beam and Reflect affect the entire screen's color palettes, effectively causing the black text and borders to change into a color from the Pokémon's palette. Some glitch Pokémon such as ▶ A include arbitrary pixels in their names, which are shown with the player's Pokémon color palette when they are mentioned in the HUD such as "<Pokémon> used <move>!"

The HP bar is present in Pokémon battles, the party screen, and a Pokémon's summary. This bar is green, yellow, or red, depending on how much remaining HP the Pokémon has. In a Pokémon battle, the Pokémon's species or name or nickname, level, status condition, and the line outside the HP bar also use the black and white colors from the HP bar palette.
The HP palettes share a yellow shade as the color ID 1, which is shortly used as the color of the HP bar or its outline when the entire screen palette is affected by moves such as Hyper Beam and Reflect.

This is a black silhouette used by Pokémon in the process of evolving, non-player characters entering Pokémon battles, Professor Oak in the new game cutscene, the entire screen during the Smokescreen and blacking out animations, the black version of the Game Freak logo at the start, and several Pokémon that appear in the game credits.
This black silhouette consists of the generic white (color ID 0) followed by three shades of black (color IDs 1-3). In Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue, the three shades of black are slightly different. In Pokémon Yellow, they are exactly the same. In all games, any originally white pixels remain white in the silhouette, such as the white parts of a character's clothing or eyes, Seel's body, Poliwhirl's belly, and so on.
This effect is absent in monochrome systems. For instance, there is no black silhouette when a Pokémon evolves or when the player blacks out in the Game Boy.
