L-Boost (skill)

L-Boost Lアタック
L Attack
Skill
Increases damage when making an L-shaped match.

L-Boost (Japanese: Lアタック L Attack) is a skill in Pokémon Shuffle.

Activation

This skill activates when making an L-shaped match. Specifically, the two lines must intersect at endpoints. The L can be rotated, provided it still meets that definition.

  • This skill cannot be triggered as a result of a foe's disruptions. This can be demonstrated in main stage 504 (Weepinbell).
  • In practice, this means the only way to trigger the skill is manually, with both lines being a match of 3.
  • Shape-based skills normally use the line of largest size for activation - or if the lines are of equal size, the horizontal line is used. Since only 3×3 is possible here, the horizontal line always triggers first.

Effect

An L-shaped match is technically two matches. When activated, this skill multiplies the damage of both matches.

However, only the first of the two matches is affected by skill level. The second match will always use the multiplier from skill level 1.

Other damage multipliers, such as those based on combo count, type matchups, or status conditions, are applied as usual. See Pokémon Shuffle → Damage for more details.

Skill level growth

Increasing skill level will increase the damage dealt by the initial match.

  • old: "Making an L-shaped match deals more damage than usual."
  • new: "Increases damage when making an L-shaped match."

Trivia

A softlock can be triggered in timed stages, using Gyarados Shiny Mega Gyarados:

  • If L-Boost is activated such that the first match Mega Evolves Gyarados Shiny Gyarados, then the second match will not receive the multiplier, as Gyarados no longer has the skill.
  • The game seems to proceed as if the second match's damage was boosted. At the end of the combo, if the enemy has a small amount of HP left, and the lost damage would have been enough to KO them, then the stage will become softlocked.
  • The timer will be frozen, and the puzzle area will remain dark and not accept input. The player is still able to access the pause menu, from which they can quit the stage.[1]
