Chalce (Japanese: アゲート Agate[3]) is a former general of the Explorers and a recurring major antagonist in Pokémon Horizons: The Series up to the Rising Again arc.

History

Pre-series
Prior to The Pendant That Starts It All (Part One), Chalce was a schoolteacher. After her school was closed due to a lack of funding, Chalce was approached by Hamber. He encouraged Chalce to join the Explorers, promising that she would earn money to build a new school if she performed well. Of the four generals Hamber trained, she was the fourth and last to be recruited, after Amethio, Coral, and Sidian.
Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Chalce first appeared as a hologram in The Ancient Poké Ball, alongside the other Explorers generals.
The first time she spoke and was seen clearly was in Quaxly, We Can Do It, questioning Spinel about his last failure.
She made her physical debut in As Long as I'm with My Friends. She and the other generals joined in a meeting to discuss the Explorers' next objective. Eventually, they decided to go after the Black Rayquaza. Despite remaining quiet for practically the entire meeting, she questioned Spinel about what he actually had in mind during his participation in the meeting.
In Respective Departures, Chalce was monitoring Amethio's training with Hamber with Spinel, so they decided to focus on their main objective, which is finding Black Rayquaza.
In The Plan to Capture Rayquaza, Chalce, Coral, and Sidian summoned the Black Rayquaza near Levincia by using a machine that generated an energy similar to that Terapagos emitted previously and had their Pokémon battle against the Sky High Pokémon. They started strong, unleashing powerful super effective moves, but lost control over Rayquaza once Dot managed to shut down the machine. Once the tides had turned, Coral let her temper overcome better judgment and commanded her Glalie to use Self-Destruct, which was powerful enough to blast the Legendary Pokémon directly into the hull of the Brave Olivine.

In Welcome to Naranja Academy!, Chalce was shown to have infiltrated Naranja Academy as a teacher, while also being able to forge enrollment permits for Coral and Sidian as students under fake names.
In Showdown! The Paldea Elite Four, Chalce watched Coral and Sidian's battles against the members of Paldea's Elite Four. During Liko's battle against Rika in the following episode, Dot discovered that Chalce was being spied on by Penny after discovering that Explorer's profile was illegally placed in the Naranja Academy system under the pseudonym Chive (Japanese: アゲパン Agepan). After a brief conversation with Dot, Chalce returned the Scarlet Book to the academy's library and left.

In The Approaching Shadow!, Chalce helped Spinel separate Liko, Roy, and Dot's group as per his goals. After Spinel trapped Liko and Amethio in a cave, Spinel revealed to Chalce what he discovered after using the Laquium, which left Chalce in awe. In the next episode, Chalce monitored Coral and Sidian's battle against Roy and Dot and upon Grusha's arrival on the battlefield, she ordered their retreat. Later, during the meeting with Gibeon, Chalce acted as Spinel orchestrated and acted in a way that made it seem as though she had no part in the events that occurred at Glaseado Mountain, resulting in Amethio being put on probation from Explorers.
In Infiltrating the System! Naranja Academy in Danger!, Chalce had infiltrated the Naranja Academy to steal data regarding Terapagos. She sent Sidian and Coral to prevent Liko and Roy from interfering, while she sent her Medicham to keep guard. Medicham proceeded to alert Chalce of Dot's arrival and battled Quaxwell to stall them both. Despite interference from Dot's Tinkatink and Penny's counter-hacking, Chalce still successfully acquired the data before recalling Medicham and teleporting away with her Xatu to escape.
In Shine on, Terastallization! Liko vs. Roy!, Chalce met up with Spinel at the Explorers base and, looking at the data she stole, they discussed on their next moves.
In The Wonders of the World!, Chalce met with Spinel at Exceed headquarters, where they discussed Amethio's whereabouts after he was put on probation.
In The Truth Revealed!, Chalce attended a meeting with the other Explorers where Sidian reported that the Rising Volt Tacklers successfully obtained all Six Heroes and restored Pagogo to its full strength. Gibeon instructed everyone to prepare for the battle that will follow in Laqua.

In Where the Land Meets the Sky, Chalce spied on the Rising Volt Tacklers from the shadows in Pericarp Town before slipping into an Exceed building when Captain Pikachu sensed her presence.
In The Pokémon Paradise of Laqua!, after Pagogo removed the barrier keeping Laqua sealed, Liko, Roy, and Dot were greeted by Chalce, Coral, and Sidian. In the following episode, the Explorers admitted they were aware of Laqua's location from the beginning and just waited for the Rising Volt Tacklers to take down the barrier for them. Having achieved their goal, the Explorers decided to get rid of the Rising Volt Tacklers by battling them. Chalce had the advantage for most of her battle with Dot, but the latter eventually started gaining the upper hand after she implemented more unpredictable tactics. The battle never reached a proper conclusion as it was interrupted when a large vortex of pink mist began filling the air.
In Guided by the Black Rayquaza!, the Explorers continued to prevent Liko's group from heading further into Laqua, only to be attacked by Onia and Zirc. This distraction allowed Liko, Roy, and Dot to run ahead and confront Gibeon. Later, Chalce and her allies supported Gibeon by utilizing machines designed to stimulate the ground where the Laquium was buried, forcibly activating it and making it expand uncontrollably. Chalce, Coral, and Sidian used their Pokémon to block any incoming attacks that would damage the machines.
In Where the Adventure Leads, Chalce watched in confusion as Gibeon vanished. However, when Spinel announced that he would surpass Gibeon and that the Explorers would take control of Laqua, she quickly came to her senses, and when Sidian and Coral began to object to Spinel's sudden ambitions, Chalce told them that everything was fine and to just keep quiet and watch.
One year later, in The Strong Sphere, Chalce monitored the exhibition battle featuring the Explorers against Liko and Roy during the Strong Sphere demonstration. When Coral commanded her Glalie to use Self-Destruct, Chalce immediately raised a wall to block off the crowd and ended the event. After Liko, Roy, and Ult escaped, she met with the other Explorers to discuss their next objectives. Chalce also reminded Coral and Sidian that as long as the Explorers have the public on their side, Liko's group can't do anything to stop them.

In Charcadet's Wish, Chalce was seen monitoring Hamber when he discovered Amethio's whereabouts from Zirc and Onia.
In Taking the Next Steps, Chalce was shown eavesdropping on a phone call between Hamber and Diana before teleporting away with the help of her Xatu.
In The Six Heroes Unleashed!, Chalce was tasked to prevent Cervantis from being rescued, challenging Dot to a battle. While her Medicham held the advantage with its use of Laquium, it was defeated once Dot's Tinkaton learned Gigaton Hammer. After her defeat, Chalce used her Xatu to retreat.
In Dot and Penny's Top-Secret Mission!, Chalce managed to intercept an invasion of Dot and Penny at the Exceed Museum along with Indi and Rubina. After a battle against the two Trainers' Pokémon, Chalce managed to separate Dot from her friend and leave the rest to her Explorer partners. Despite having the upper hand throughout the battle against Quaxwell and Tinkaton, Chalce couldn't prevent Dot from evolving her Gimmighoul and thus recovering the data on Laquium. Although she tried to stop Penny and Dot from escaping, she chose not to go after them, saying that at that moment it wouldn't make any difference to the Exceed's plans.

In HZ124, the younger Rising Volt Tacklers and Amethio infiltrated the Explorers HQ to rescue the captured Six Heroes. They broke into the building, but were led into Spinel's trap, who had each of the five youths isolated with an Explorers member commanding one of the Six Heroes. Chalce battled Dot with Arboliva, but while she managed to defeat Dot's Quaxwell, Arboliva eventually fell to the combined efforts of Tinkaton and Gholdengo. Once all of the Six Heroes were defeated, Pagogo used its power to cure them of the Laquium's effects. Liko and the others escaped with the Six Heroes, but unbeknownst to them, Spinel recorded their encounter and manipulated the events to make the Rising Volt Tacklers appear as the villains. He used this to forced the Rising Volt Tacklers into hiding from the public and advertise the Strong Sphere.
In HZ130, Strong Spheres were officially released into the public and were a commercial success. Worried about the Rising Volt Tacklers trying to interfere with his schemes, Spinel asked Chalce to act as security on Mount Pericarp. Just as she, Coral, and Sidian were preparing to leave, they were approached by Hamber, who pleaded that they reject Strong Spheres and stop working for Spinel. Chalce refused and battled alongside Coral and Sidian against their former teacher. Hamber utilized his recently-caught Bloodmoon Ursaluna to defeat Coral and Sidian, forcing Chalce to Mega Evolve her Medicham and win. Despite his loss, Hamber noted that by using Mega Evolution, Chalce showed that she still believed in the power of bonds. Chalce denied this and ordered some grunts to capture Hamber, only for him to escape.

In HZ133, Chalce, Coral, and Sidian intercepted Roy, Ult, and Friede upon the Rising Volt Tacklers's arrival at Laqua, triggering a Triple Battle between both parties. Chalce promptly Mega Evovled her Medicham, while Coral and Sidian likewise Mega Evolved their Glalie and Aerodactyl, facing off against Roy's Lucario, Ult's Sableye, and Friede's Starmie. The battle continued in the following episode, as Chalce kept giving her all against Roy despite her Medicham reverting back to its normal form. However, the battle ended as a win for the Rising Volt Tacklers when Coral ordered her Mega Glalie to use a Refrigerate-boosted Self-Destruct. Not willing to accept defeat, Chalce used a Strong Sphere on her Medicham as a last ditch effort. However, after Roy tells her that Medicham wanted her instead of the Strong Sphere and seeing her partner battle differently, Chalce became horrified. Once Roy's Lucario defeated Medicham, Chalce goes to her partner's side and finally understood how much it did for her.

In HZ135, Chalce, Sidian, and Coral appeared before everyone at the summit of Laqua, each declaring that they now reject the Strong Sphere and are no longer working for Spinel. Chalce and Sidian watch Coral Terastallized Screamypuff and had it fill the role of one of the eighteen Tera Type Pokémon needed to fully purify the Laquium, replacing Penny's Sylveon. Refusing to let his machinations be ruined, Spinel fused with the Laquium itself, causing the Core to rise from the earth and begin attacking anyone it perceived as a threat. In the next episode, Chalce, Sidian, and Coral decided to buy Roy and Amethio time for their Mega-Evolved Legendary Pokémon to get charged up so they can destroy the Laquium Core's defenses after witnessing the Rising Volt Tacklers, their allies, and Hamber not giving up. Chalce then witnesses the Laquium Core being destroyed for good. After the threat with Laquium was over, Chalce decided to leave the Explorers and start her life anew as a teacher once again.
Character

Chalce appears to have a calm and collected personality; she does, however, tend to be critical towards her allies if they fail missions, such as with Spinel and Amethio, as well as having a sarcastic sense of humor. She is also shown to be a skeptic, dismissing the existence of the ancient Pokémon discussed in Occulture as nonsense. She appears to get along with Spinel, with both of them being Trainers who specialize in gathering information, being discreet, and using subterfuge. In general, Chalce appears to be the intellectual of the group, researching and gathering knowledge and designing technology to help the Explorers achieve their missions.

Amidst the internal power struggle for supremacy between the Explorers generals, Chalce has proven to be particularly aligned towards Spinel and his goals, helping him monitor his various targets, joining him during the mission to try to get Amethio out of the way in The Approaching Shadow!, and ultimately giving her full support to his takeover of the Explorers as of Where the Adventure Leads. However, she has also subtly expressed discomfort with the ruthless extremes Spinel is willing to take as the new leader to achieve his goals and crush his opposition. She was seemingly displeased with Spinel declaring that he wanted Amethio to disappear and later expressed concern over his hastiness in wanting to crush the Rising Volt Tacklers using the Six Heroes. When Hamber made a comment on how she's "changed" since working with Spinel, she seemed emotionally affected by his remark and declared that she simply has her own goal to achieve, implying that she sees her cooperation with Spinel as more of an alliance of convenience rather than her becoming genuinely loyal to his goals. Ultimately, despite having often acted together numerous times, Chalce's association with Spinel can be described as a complicated one.
In HZ130, it was shown that Chalce was once a kind and caring individual. As a former teacher, she was dedicated to supporting her hometown and the students of her school. She was devastated by her losses and was willing to accept help from anyone, which led her to accept Hamber's offer to join the Explorers. It's implied that her continued support for Spinel is motivated by a desire to fulfill her wish of a new school. This transition from her past to the present illustrates how she has shifted from a compassionate person seeking knowledge to a ruthless individual who withholds critical information from the public to advance her own goals with Spinel, demonstrating that she has lost her way. However, after being called out by Roy and seeing how much her Medicham was willing to push itself for her in HZ134, Chalce realizes that she lost herself and expressed remorse for hurting her partner. Upon realizing the error of her ways and Spinel had no intention of honoring her request of making a new school at her hometown, Chalce decided to take a stand against him. She even decided to leave the Explorers and go back to teaching in HZ136, as she wanted to start her life over.
Among the members of the Rising Volt Tacklers, Chalce appears to clash most often with Dot, confronting her several times, including intellectually, this began during the battle against Rayquaza in The Plan to Capture Rayquaza and extended throughout and after the period in which Dot was present at Tera Training.
Pokémon
As seen so far, Chalce appears to specialize in Psychic-type Pokémon.

Medicham is Chalce's first known Pokémon, as well as her main partner and battling Pokémon. It is capable of Mega Evolving, although, according to Sidian, in a weaker state due to the constant use of Strong Sphere having weakened their bond.
Like its Trainer, Medicham has a calm and reserved personality and prefers to battle strategically, using its psychic powers to predict its opponent's moves and then counterattacking. Out of the Rising Volt Tacklers, Medicham was often pitted against Dot's Quaxwell, even as a Quaxly.
In The Six Heroes Unleashed!, Medicham was used against Dot's Tinkaton. This time, Chalce used a Strong Sphere on it, boosting its power and speed, but turning its battle style into a more head-on approach. Medicham was eventually defeated in a single hit once Tinkaton learned Gigaton Hammer.
It Mega Evolved for the first time in HZ130, during a battle against Hamber. Initially, it had been paired with Coral's Glalie and Sidian's Garganacl, and the three of them were exposed to Strong Spheres, but Hamber still managed to keep the upper hand for the majority of the battle and defeated Glalie and Garganacl once he revealed his Bloodmoon Ursaluna. At this moment, Chalce Mega Evolved Medicham, giving it the necessary power boost to defeat its opponent, but leaving it heavily exhausted.
In HZ133, Medicham Mega Evolved alongside Coral's Glalie and Sidian's Aerodactyl against Roy, Ult, and Friede's own Mega-Evolved Pokémon. The battle continued in the following episode, and ended as a win for the Rising Volt Tacklers after Coral ordered her Mega Glalie to use a Refrigerate-boosted Self-Destruct. Despite this, Chalce refused to accept their loss and used a Strong Sphere on Medicham as a last-ditch effort, but it was then quickly defeated by Roy's Mega Lucario Z.
Medicham's known moves are Psybeam, Zen Headbutt, Confusion, Calm Mind, Stored Power, and Axe Kick.
Xatu is Chalce's second known Pokémon. She is often used to Teleport Chalce away from the scene, allowing her to escape.
In Dot and Penny's Top-Secret Mission!, Xatu was paired with Medicham, Indi's Drapion, and Rubina's Scolipede to battle against Dot and Penny at the Exceed Museum. After capturing Dot's Gimmighoul and keeping it hostage, Chalce was able to lead Dot away and separate her from Penny. In the ensuing battle, Xatu managed to trick Dot's Quaxwell into attacking Tinkaton by using Teleport at the right moment and even hindered Tinkaton's attack power by using Power Swap, but Dot managed to flee once her Gimmighoul evolved into Gholdengo.
In HZ136, Xatu helped fight the Laquium Core before Pagogo erased it for good.
Xatu's known moves are Teleport, Night Shade, Aerial Ace, Power Swap, and Air Slash.
