Galar Collection

The first products of the Sword & Shield TCG Series were a trio of Galar Collection boxes, released on November 15, 2019 in conjunction with the worldwide launch of the Pokémon Sword and Shield video games. The three collections featured the Galar region's first partner PokémonGrookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble—and included Line Holofoil prints of all three. The focal Pokémon of each box was included as a SWSH Black Star Promotional card, while the other two first partner Pokémon were sourced from the then upcoming Sword & Shield expansion. Each collection also included an oversized card featuring either Zacian or Zamazenta as a teaser for the Pokémon V mechanic and their appearance as the game mascots for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, respectively. These cards lacked the Pokémon's type, Weakness, Resistance, Retreat Cost, Ability, Energy cost, and Evolution Stage. In addition to the showcased cards, each box contained four booster packs (typically two Cosmic Eclipse, one Unbroken Bonds, and one Evolutions), a code card for the Pokémon Trading Card Game Online, and a pin of the focal first partner Pokémon.

Trade and Play Kit

Participating stores in several countries hosted Trade and Play events at the end of February 2020 in celebration of Pokémon Day. These events catered for children who were newcomers to the TCG, encouraging them to meet, trade, and battle with others. Much like similar events held in 2019, visitors were given a free Trade and Play Kit while stocks lasted—an oversized booster pack that contained a three-card Fun Pack, an activity sheet, a coin, and a trading guide. The Fun Packs were initially from the Sword & Shield expansion and contained two Common cards plus one Parallel Holofoil card; kits distributed later in the year could include Fun Packs from the Rebel Clash or Darkness Ablaze expansions. Possible coin designs included Orange Frosted Holofoil Lycanroc and Blue Rainbow Holofoil Lucario; later kits could also come with Orange Cracked Ice Holofoil Charizard coins.

The trading guide features A Guide to Trading Cards on one side and a Trading Card Breakdown on the other. A Guide to Trading Cards touches upon rarity and briefly explains what Pokémon V, Pokémon VMAX, Pokémon-GX, Prism Star, and Full Art cards are, as well as advising kit recipients to trade cards that have similar rarities. The Trading Card Breakdown features a typical Pokémon card with annotations, similar to those found in rulebooks, and a type guide. The enclosed activity sheet varied, with possible challenges including:

  • Evolutions – Match each Pokémon with the one it evolves into.
  • Picture Copy – Copy the image of Scorbunny using the 5×10 grid of squares.
  • Silhouette – Identify the silhouettes of the Galar first partner Pokémon.
  • Sudoku – Complete the 4×4 Sudoku grid using the remaining Pokémon images.
  • Word Search – Find the twelve Galar Pokémon hidden in the letter grid.

The kits were available first in Canada and Australia at participating EB Games stores from February 27,[1][2] followed by distributions in Canadian Toys "R" Us stores and participating Best Buy stores in the United States from February 29.[3] More waves of kits were available at the same retail chains later in the year.

Spring 2020 Collector Chest

The first iteration in the Collector Chest product line for the Sword & Shield Series was released on April 3, 2020. It included Holofoil variants of Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble from Sword & Shield, a coin featuring the trio, a notepad, a mini portfolio, five booster packs, and a TCGO code card. This was the first Collector Chest not to include a set of pencils, which were replaced by two sticker sheets for a total of four. Initial releases of the chest included two Sword & Shield packs, one Cosmic Eclipse pack, one Burning Shadows pack, one Evolutions pack, and a Silver Rainbow Holofoil coin. Later shipments from around December 2020 substituted the Silver Rainbow Holofoil coin for a Silver Starlight Holofoil one and replaced the Cosmic Eclipse pack with one from an earlier Sun & Moon Series expansion. Possible packs included Crimson Invasion, Ultra Prism, or Unified Minds.

Galar Pals Mini Tins

The Galar Pals Mini Tins were a continuation of the mini tin product line that launched in the Sun & Moon Series. The first quintet of the Sword & Shield Series, and the third overall, was released on April 3, 2020 and collectively featured a Naoki Saito illustration of Pokémon native to the Galar region. Each tin contained two booster packs, a coin, and an art card. The front of the art card features the same illustration segment as the tin it came in, while the reverse features the Pokédex entry of the tin's focal Pokémon. Different coin designs and selections of booster packs could be found in the tins depending on when they were packaged—production codes on the tins provided a rough indication of their contents. Tins released on April 3 could have one of two codes, "K19" or "A20", and could include one pack each of Evolutions and Sword & Shield or one pack each of Burning Shadows and Sword & Shield. Tins released later in 2020 featured the production code "D20" and typically included one pack each of Sun & Moon and Sword & Shield.

Rebel Clash Build & Battle Box

Main article: Rebel Clash Build & Battle Box (TCG)

Approved locations were scheduled to host Rebel Clash Prerelease Tournaments on the weekends of April 18–19 and April 25–26, 2020; however, due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, all Play! Pokémon events for the remainder of the 2019-2020 season were canceled. As a result, locations that received Rebel Clash Build & Battle Boxes for distribution were permitted to sell them from April 18; a more general retail release followed on May 1, 2020. Each box contained four Rebel Clash booster packs plus a 23-card Evolution pack, which included one of four exclusive promotional cards.

Sword & Shield Jumbo Binder

A card binder designed to hold Jumbo cards was first available starting the week of April 26, 2020 during a GameStop purchase campaign. Customers spending $25 or more on select TCG products received the binder and a Jumbo Snorlax VMAX with a Sword & Shield expansion logo stamp. The binder could later be purchased directly from select retailers. It contains six pages, allowing up to twelve Jumbo cards to be held double-loaded. These pages however, are only adequate to store Jumbo cards released as of the Sword & Shield Series.

Rebel Clash Blisters

The Rebel Clash expansion saw the release of more blister packs on May 1, 2020. Single Pack Blisters included either a promotional Mantine or Noctowl card, while Three Pack Blisters contained either Rayquaza or Duraludon promotional cards. Both products included one of a number of possible coins, though the Lycanroc coin included differed from official product shots.

Another pair of blisters became available in early May at Target stores. Like previous Premium Checklane Blisters, these products focused on three-card evolutionary chains, containing either the Gengar line or Galarian Obstagoon line. Each blister also came with one booster pack and a Lucario coin. Stage 1 Blisters that featured the Boltund and Galarian Perrserker lines were also quietly released at Target stores in mid-May. Unlike prior products, the highest Stage Evolution card was not included as a Cosmos Holofoil variant in any of the Target-exclusive blisters, instead featuring the standard in-set Line Holofoil treatment and therefore no different to those found in booster packs.
