Route 111 (Desert)

Route 111

With the Go-Goggles, this latest visit to Route 111 is the first in which you are able to venture into the windswept desert. The powerful sandstorm deters most would-be explorers, so there are many treasures yet to be discovered among the dunes.

Relic Recovery

In the desert's northeast corner, the unending sandstorm has uncovered two treasures from the ancient past: the Root Fossil and the Claw Fossil, left behind by Pokémon that once lived in the primordial ocean. It is only possible to claim one of them, as the other will then sink into the sands, so choose wisely!

Desert Ruins

An unusual arrangement of large stones can be found on the south side of the desert. It is rumored to mark the resting place of a certain Pokémon, but there seems to be no way inside.

Get Going to Gym 5!

With the Lavaridge Gym defeated and the desert scoured for treasure, the next destination is Petalburg City. The city lies far to the southwest, but the easiest way to return by foot is to travel west through Verdanturf Town and Rustboro City.

Rustboro City

Devon Corporation

2F

Visit Devon Corporation on the way, and climb to the second floor. Speak to the Scientist near the south wall to learn that he has successfully developed a device that resurrects Pokémon from fossils. He notices the fossil in your Bag, and asks if you would like to bring that Pokémon back to life with his Fossil Regenerator. Hand the relic over to him, and he starts up his device. It takes a moment to complete, so leave the room and return a short time later to receive the ancient Pokémon! The Root Fossil becomes Lileep, a Rock/Grass Pokémon. The Claw Fossil becomes Anorith, a Rock/Bug Pokémon. Both creatures return to life at level 20.

Petalburg Gym

Petalburg Gym
Petalburg City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Norman

A man in pursuit of power!

The Petalburg Gym specializes in Normal-type Pokémon. Normal-type moves are not super effective against any Pokémon, while Normal-type Pokémon are weak to Fighting-type moves.

The Gym features several rooms, each with a single Trainer who uses a certain type of item to gain the upper hand in battle. The sign on each door gives a clue to the strategy of the Trainer in the room behind it. The first two rooms beyond the lobby are labeled "Speed Room" and "Accuracy Room". The next three rooms are labeled "Zero Reduction Room", "Defense Room", and "Recovery Room". The final two rooms are labeled "Strength Room" and "One-Hit KO Room". A minimum of three Gym Trainers must be defeated to reach the Gym Leader.

Room Opponent Item Used Notes

Speed Room Cooltrainer Randall X Speed X Speed Paralysis, and moves like Rock Tomb, lower the target's Speed.
Accuracy Room Cooltrainer Mary X Accuracy X Accuracy Moves like Flash and Muddy Water disorient the target, lowering its Accuracy.
Middle row

Defense Room Cooltrainer Lori X Defense X Defense Special attacks ignore the target's physical Defense.
Recovery Room Cooltrainer George Super Potion Super Potion Chip away at the target's HP before landing the finishing move.
Back row
Strength Room Cooltrainer Jody X Attack X Attack Counter with Attack-lowering moves or Abilities, or boost the user's physical Defense.
One-Hit KO Room Cooltrainer Berke Dire Hit Dire Hit Super effective moves can cause a knockout before the target can land a critical hit.
Rooms are listed from west to east.

Norman has been waiting for you in the final room. Realizing that you have already earned four other Badges, he accepts that you are capable enough to battle him. He is happy to finally have a real battle with his child, but promises to hold nothing back! He leads with the first of his two Slaking, a species with high physical Attack. This advantage is mitigated somewhat by its Ability, Truant; the Pokémon would rather loaf around, and only acts every other turn. In the meantime, attack with your strongest special attacks to overwhelm its impressive HP rating. His Vigoroth is much more energetic, and its Vital Spirit Ability prevents sleep. His second Slaking can restore its health with Slack Off; use your strongest attacks to knock it out quickly, before it can use Focus Punch! Avoid using status-inflicting moves; each of Norman's Pokémon knows Facade, which doubles in power when the user is poisoned, paralyzed, or burned.

After the battle, Norman awards you the Balance Badge, which boosts a Pokémon's Defense by 10% during battle and enables the use of Surf in the field. He also gives you TM42 (Facade) as a prize. A moment later, he remembers that Wally's parents visited a short time ago, and said that they have a gift for you.

Wally's house

Visit Wally's house next door to the Gym, and speak to his father. He informs you that Wally's health has greatly improved since traveling to Verdanturf Town, and the family owes it all to you. He thanks you for helping Wally catch his first Pokémon, and for being a great friend, and gives you HM03 (Surf) to show his appreciation. When used in the field, this move allows the user to cross bodies of water. Be sure to revisit previous locations so as not to miss out on any treasures!

Eastward Expansion

Having now explored the western part of the Hoenn region, the next step is to turn eastward. Return to Oldale Town, then use Surf on Route 103 to reach Route 110, and continue northward to Mauville City.

Mauville City

Wattson's Worry

Upon returning to Mauville City, you find Wattson outside the Pokémon Center. Speak to him, and he asks for a favor. He explains that the city has an underground sector called New Mauville, but the generator there has been running a bit erratically lately. He asks that you go and turn off the generator there, as it is becoming unsafe. He gives you the Basement Key to access the area, and directs you toward Route 110. The entrance to the facility is located in the northeast part of the route; Surf eastward from the north end of Seaside Cycling Road to reach it.

Route 110

New Mauville

New Mauville, B1F

New Mauville is a power plant located underneath Mauville City. It was originally intended to be an underground city, before it was discovered that it already served as a habitat for wild Pokémon.

Entrance

The entrance is a single small chamber. Approach the door and use the Basement Key to enter the southeast room.

B1F

The lower floor uses a series of floor switches in different colors as a security measure; when stepped on, all doors of the same color open while all others close.

Step on the blue switch in the southeast room, then go west. Press the green switch in the south-central room and continue on. Pass by the third switch in the south-southwest room. Move through the large central room to reach an Ultra Ball in the east-central room. Return to the larger room to reach an Escape Rope; collect the item, then step on the blue switch beneath it. Go northwest to reach a small room with two switches; pick up the Parlyz Heal from the green switch to the left, and continue northward. Follow the hallway to the north-central room; grab the Full Heal to the right, then press the green switch beneath it. This opens the door to the northeast room, which houses the generator. Collect the Thunderstone to the east, then step on the red switch to shut down the machine.

Mauville City

Crisis Contained

With your task complete, return to Wattson outside the Pokémon Center. Inform him of your success, and he rewards you with TM24 (Thunderbolt).

Route 118

Route 118

Route 118 is a seaside route that connects the Mauville City to the west with Route 118 to the north and Route 123 to the east. A river feeds into the ocean here, acting as a natural barrier to anyone unable to cross the waves.

Get Good with a Good Rod

Speak to the Fisherman on the eastern shore to receive a Good Rod. This mid-level fishing rod can reel in a greater variety of water-dwelling Pokémon than the Old Rod. Be sure to revisit previous locations to look for new Pokémon!

Gabby and Ty

After your first interview on the south side of Route 111, the intrepid news team can be found searching for their next story on the eastern bank of Route 118's river. Accept their challenge to another Double Battle and be sure to give them a great interview when the dust settles!

Meet up with Steven

As you leave the beach, you are approached by Steven. He hasn't seen you since your first meeting in Granite Cave, and is pleased to see how much you have grown as a Trainer. He wonders if you will raise Pokémon of all types, or only a certain one. He expresses his wish that the two of you meet again, and leaves to the east.
