Biology
Biology
Physiology
Zapdos is a large, avian Pokémon with predominantly yellow plumage. It has small, triangular eyes with black around them and a long, thin, light orange beak. Its wings and tail are a mass of spiky feathers and there are black feathers covering the back of its wings and inner tail feathers. A large crest of spiked feathers surrounds its head. Its thighs are tan, and it has thin, light orange legs. It has feet with three forward facing toes and one backward facing toe; each toe has a short talon.
Zapdos has the form of a large bird with black and yellow plumage. Its spiky feathers make it look like it is made of lightning. Its tail feathers stick out in several directions, furthering this illusion. A large crest of feathers decorates its head, and distinctive black rings encircle its eyes. Its beak is very long and thin. While Zapdos is the smallest and lightest of the legendary birds, it is still a fairly large Pokémon.

When Zapdos flaps its glittering wings, it releases electricity that can potentially cause thunderstorms. It produces massive crackling and snapping sounds when it flies; these are attributed to the lightning bolts it sheds when airborne. Zapdos reportedly appears only during thunderstorms and gains power when struck by lightning. It is said to live among thunderclouds, but it is List of Pokémon by habitat

In the anime
In the main series
Major appearances
Legendary birds (M02)
Zapdos debuted in The Power of One. Lawrence III wanted to capture the three Legendary birds, as well as their master Lugia, for his own personal collection.

Other
Zapdos made its main series debut in As Clear As Crystal. When TRT made an attempt to steal a crystal that gave a lake the ability to heal Electric Pokémon, they were sidetracked when Zapdos showed up and they changed their objective to capture Zapdos instead.

The Mirage Master briefly wielded the power of a Mirage Zapdos in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon.

Gender differences
A Zapdos appeared in An Electrifying Rage!. It was first seen flying across the sky by Ash and ashfr. TRT later made an attempt to capture Zapdos, which infuriated it, forcing Ash to battle it with Talonflame, Hawlucha, and newly-evolved Noivern. When Team Rocket continued their attempt, Noivern and Pikachu helped save Zapdos and calm it down.
Zapdos is a genderless species.

Special abilities
Minor appearances
When Zapdos flaps its glittering wings, it releases electricity, potentially causing thunderstorms.
A Zapdos appeared in TRT's fantasy in An EGG-sighting Adventure!.

Behavior
A Zapdos appeared in the ending credits of Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea. Jackie captured it with a Capture Styler and flew away on its back.
Zapdos is one of the legendary birds of Kanto. It is a poorly understood species, believed by many to be pure myth. It is always seen in conjunction with thunderstorms, leading many to believe that it gathers energy from the electricity in the atmosphere. It is also reported to cause massive crackling and snapping sounds when it flies; these are attributed to the lightning bolts it is said to shed when airborne.

Habitat
A Zapdos made a cameo appearance in Doc Brock!. This may have been taken from Platinum, where a Zapdos could be seen roaming throughout Sinnoh.

When Zapdos is sighted, which is not often, it is almost always during electrical storms. It appears to live in thunderclouds, but one is said to live in or near a power plant in Kanto. It may be attracted by the electricity the plant produces.

Diet
A Zapdos made a cameo appearance in a flashback in Dealing With a Fierce Double Ditto Drama!, and both of Narissa's Ditto transformed into it.
Pokémon food

In the anime
A Zapdos made a cameo appearance in the opening sequence of Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.

Major appearances
The Power of One
Legendary birds (movie 2) made its first true appearance in The Power of One. Lawrence III wanted to capture the three Kanto Legendary Birds as well as Lugia.

Other
A Zapdos made a brief cameo in the opening sequence of The Rise of Darkrai, where it was seen flying across the sky.
The Electric Pokémon made another appearance in As Clear As Crystal. When Team Rocket made an attempt to steal a crystal that gave a lake the ability to heal Electric Pokémon, they were side-tracked when Zapdos showed up and changed their objective to capture Zapdos instead.

Minor appearances
A Zapdos appeared in a flashback in Dealing With a Fierce Double Ditto Drama!.
The first time Zapdos was seen was in Island of the Giant Pokémon. However, it wasn't a real Zapdos, just a machine.

A Zapdos made an appearance in the credits of Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea. Jackie had captured it with a Capture Styler and flew away on it.
A Zapdos made a cameo appearance in the opening sequence of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

A Zapdos made a cameo appearance in Doc Brock!. This may have been taken from Platinum, where in this version, there is a Zapdos roaming Sinnoh. It made another cameo in Dealing With a Fierce Double Ditto Drama!, this time in a flashback.
A Zapdos appeared in I Choose You!.

Having captured this legendary bird in the abandoned Power Plant as in the games, [[Lt. ==Trivia==
Trivia
* Of all legendary Pokémon with fixed in-game locations, Zapdos can be obtained with the fewest number of badges: 3. In the Generation I games and their remakes, one can catch Zapdos with only the Boulder, Cascade, and Soul although it is far too strong for most trainers at that stage, at level 50.
* Of all Legendary Pokémon with fixed in-game locations, Zapdos can be obtained with the fewest number of Badges: 2. The player can catch Zapdos with only the Boulder and the Cascade.
* In Generation I, Zapdos was the only dual-type Electric Pokémon, as Magnemite and Magneton did not gain a secondary type until Steel was introduced in Generation II.
* Zapdos shares its category with Elekid and Electabuzz. They are all known as the Electric Pokémon.
* Zapdos shares the same species name with Elekid and Electabuzz. They are all known as Electric Pokémon.
* Zapdos and Jolteon's Japanese names are almost exactly the same as each other's, with a final s being the only difference.
* Zapdos and Jolteon have almost the same Japanese name, a final s being the only difference.
* Zapdos possesses a type advantage over all other members of its trio, as well as its trio master, Lugia.
* Zapdos is the only one of the legendary birds to not have a double weakness to Rock (or for that matter, any double weakness).
* In the anime episode The Bridge Bike Gang, Chopper's bike was decorated to look like a Zapdos.
* Zapdos shares its cry with 'M.
* In Generation II, Zapdos was given an additional toe pointing forward on each foot giving it three. However, Stadium 2 shares the same 3-D model for Zapdos as its Generation I 3-D games, Pokémon Stadium and Snap, so in that game, it still only has two.
** The exception being Pokémon Yellow's sprite, wherein it does in fact have three front toes.
*Zapdos has the second highest Special Attack of all Electric-types with 125. Magnezone ranks first in this regard.

Origin
Origin
Zapdos is based on the Native American legend of the thunderbird (mythology). The thunderbird was known for being the spirit of thunder, lightning, and rain in the form of a giant bird. The beating of the wings was said to create thunder. Zapdos (Japanese: サンダー Thunder) is a dual-type Electric/Flying Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Along with Articuno and Moltres, it is one of the three Legendary birds of Kanto.

Biology

Zapdos is a large, avian Pokémon with predominantly yellow plumage. It has small, triangular eyes with black around them and a long, thin, light orange beak. Its wings and tail are a mass of spiky feathers and there are black feathers covering the back of its wings and inner tail feathers. A large crest of spiked feathers surrounds its head. Its thighs are tan, and it has thin, light orange legs. It has feet with three forward facing toes and one backward facing toe; each toe has a short talon.

It is said to live among thunderclouds, but it is rarely seen.

Having captured this Legendary bird in the abandoned Power Plant in Holy Moltres as in the games, Lt. Surge appears with Zapdos in his team during the events of Volume 3, using it as a never-ending power source for his Electric types, allowing them to continually shock Red at full force, a strategy that turns against him when Red uses Saur's Razor Leaf to cut the supply cords and his insulating underwear with them. After having been merged with Articuno and Moltres into an undiscovered Pokémon, the three Pallet Town Trainers are able to defeat the combined monster, so it leaves his team, and Team Rocket afterwards to go back to the wild.

Green later captures Zapdos before the Gold, Silver & Crystal arc and uses it against Will and Karen, having caught it and its Legendary bird companions on her personal training journey to overcome her fear of birds. During this battle, it is lent to Blue when things get rough. Once returned, it is put back in its Poké Ball and isn't seen again, meaning it has either been deposited into her box or released.

Trivia

 • Of all Legendary Pokémon with fixed in-game locations, Zapdos can be obtained with the fewest number of Badges: 2. The player can catch Zapdos with only the Boulder Badge and the Cascade Badge.
 • Zapdos shares its category with Elekid and Electabuzz. They are all known as the Electric Pokémon.
 • Zapdos and Jolteon's Japanese names are almost exactly the same as each other's, with a final s being the only difference.
 • Zapdos possesses a type advantage over all other members of its trio, as well as its trio master, Lugia.
 • In the anime episode The Bridge Bike Gang, Chopper's bike was decorated to look like a Zapdos.

Origin

Zapdos may be based on the Native American legend of the thunderbird, a spirit of thunder, lightning, and rain that took the form of a giant bird. The beating of the wings was said to create thunder. It may also have been based on the lightning bird, a bird created from wherever lightning hits the earth. Aesthetically, it may also be based on hummingbirds, due to the long beak, the rather simple wings, and described violent behavior.

Name origin

Zapdos is a combination of zap and dos (Spanish for two, indicating that it is the second in the series of Kanto Legendary birds).

Thunder is literally thunder.
