Yanma (Japanese: ヤンヤンマ Yanyanma) is a Bug/Flying-type Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Yanma are large red dragonfly Pokémon. They have a long thin abdomen and a comparatively short thorax. It has three pairs of legs and two pairs of wings with red bands on them. Its head is mostly red as well save for its very large bright green eyes. These eyes take up most of the space of its head. It has exceptional vision.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

It can use its Template:A2 to see completely around it, and uses this to capture prey and avoid predators. It also can flap its wings very fast to generate shockwaves, which can break glass. Yanma's trademark attack seems to be SonicBoom, as seen in the anime and Pokédex.

Behavior

Habitat

In Pokémon Gold and Silver, Yanma were very rare except when there would be a occasional swarm of them.

Diet

In the anime

File:Wings 'N' Things.jpg
Yanma in the anime.

Yanma first appeared in Wings n' Things. It was (carelessly) breaking glass in a town.

Yanma also made a cameo in Pikachu's PikaBoo.

A Yanma appeared in All in a Day's Wurmple, under the ownership of Forrester Franklin.

In DP080, a trainer was about to capture a Yanma that his Piplup had weakened, when Team Rocket showed up, and Jessie captured it instead. They sent it to Giovanni; However, he deemed it too weak and returned it to them. When Jessie used Yanma in battle, it used Ancientpower and evolved into a Yanmega. Another Yanma appeared afterwards, and the trainer captured that one.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Special manga

A trio of Yanma are accidentally let loose in Template:PSV, causing minor chaos at Indigo Plateau.

Trivia

  • Yanma weighs exactly the same as the male player character in Diamond and Pearl, as seen in the weight comparison feature of the Pokédex.
  • Even though Yanma is said to generate shock waves from its wings, it cannot learn Shock Wave. This is probably because the attack Shock Wave is an electrical shock, while the shock waves that Yanma generates are similar to SonicBoom.
  • Yanma has a head similar to the head of Caterpie.
  • Yanma is the first Pokémon to learn moves later than its evolved form.

Origin

It is, as its name suggested, based on an ancient dragonfly because of its size and weight. It also seems to have an airplane-like tail.

Name origin

Yanma's name is an abbreviation of its Japanese name, which is in turn 蜻蜓 yanma, large dragonfly, partially doubled.
