Whirlpool (Japanese: うずしお Whirl Tide) is a damage-dealing Template:Type2 move introduced in Generation II. It was the first HM move to lose its HM status, and was later followed by Flash and Dive.

Effect

Generation II

In battle

Whirlpool inflicts damage and traps the target in a whirlpool for 2-5 turns, damaging them slightly at the end of each turn.

Outside of battle

Whirlpool clears whirlpools in the field.

Generation III and on

Whirlpool inflicts damage and traps the target in a whirlpool for 2-5 turns, damaging them slightly at the end of each turn.

If a wild Pokémon uses Whirlpool on the player's Pokémon, the player may escape if his or her Pokémon has the Run Away ability. However, Run Away does not allow the player to switch the Pokémon out.

Generation IV

If the user of Whirlpool is holding a Grip Claw, the duration of Whirlpool is always 5 turns.

In the anime

Pokémon
