Water route

A water route, sometimes sea route (Japanese: すいどう sea route), is a route that crosses a body of water, and may be made up nearly entirely of water with the exception of some islands. Water routes typically begin to appear late in the game, and can usually only be traversed by using Surf.

Characteristics

Water routes are often among the longest routes in the games, often densely-populated with Swimmers who use Template:Type2 Pokémon. Unlike land routes, on water routes wild Pokémon can attack at any time, forcing Trainers to stay alert. Typically, Tentacool and Tentacruel are common sights.

Some water routes in Johto have whirlpools blocking the way, while some in Hoenn have spots where it is deep enough to dive underwater.
