Water-type Pokémon:

Characteristics

Defensively, the Water-type is very strong when combined with high defensive stats. It has no weaknesses to any types which usually use physical moves, Grass-type attacks are rare and a Water-type Pokémon can simply switch away from any Electric-type attacks. However, switching is unnecessary if the Pokémon in question are part Ground like Quagsire, Swampert, Whiscash, and Gastrodon.

The Water-type is also useful offensively. A good amount of Water-type Pokémon can learn Ice Beam to deal with Dragon and Grass-types, which would make their resistance to Water-type attacks irrelevant. It can be extremely useful to be super-effective against Ground- and Template:Type2s when traveling through caves, etc. As a result of these advantages, as well as having to get through water routes using Surf, most trainers usually have at least one Water-type in their party.

Trivia

  • Of all seventeen types, the Water-type is the most abundant, with 92 Pokémon species, nearly 19% of the entire known Pokédex, being of the Water-type. This probably reflects all the different species of lifeforms that inhabit the real world's oceans, lakes and rivers.
  • All Generation I Water-type Pokémon are weak to Electric moves because there were no dual Dragon-, Electric-, or Template:Type2s to neutralize the weakness and dual Water/Template:Type2 Pokémon were not introduced until Generation II.
  • Every main protagonist in the anime (with the obvious exception of Max) has had at least one Water-type Pokémon. Ash has Squirtle, Kingler, Totodile, Corphish and Buizel, all of Misty's Pokémon except Togetic and Azurill are Water-types, Brock has Ludicolo and Marshtomp, Tracey has Marill, May has Wartortle, Dawn has Piplup and used to have Buizel, Jessie had Shellder and Magikarp, and James had Gyarados.
  • Although Misty stats in the games that she prefers an all out offense using water Pokémon, most Water Pokémon in the game usually tend to have higher defenses, gaining the title "Bulky Water" Pokémon. Some examples include Slowbro, Slowking, Suicune, and Gyarados.
