The Water type (Japanese: みずタイプ Water type) is one of the eighteen types. Notable Trainers who specialize in Water-type Pokémon include Misty of Cerulean City, Juan and Wallace of Sootopolis City, Crasher Wake of Pastoria City, Cress of Striaton City, Marlon of Humilau City, Siebold of the Elite Four, and Lana of Konikoni City. Prior to changes in Generation IV, all damaging Water-type moves were special, but they may now also be physical depending on the attack.
The Water type (Japanese: みずタイプ Water type) is one of the eighteen types. Water-type moves are super effective against Fire-, Ground-, and Rock Pokémon, while Water-type Pokémon are weak to Electric- and Grass moves.

Defense
Flexheader
Defensively, the Water type is very strong when combined with high defensive stats. Most Water types can use Ice moves to counter Grass types. As such, Electric types are the only true threat to Water types, as few Pokémon of the Water type can learn strong Ground moves. However, Water types that have Grass, Ground, or Dragon as their other type have the advantage of having their Electric weakness nullified. Although these type combinations are neutral to Ice, it is possible to deal 4× times damage with Freeze-Dry, an Ice-type move introduced in Generation VI that ignores the Water type's resistance to Ice.

Water-type Pokémon often have the most balanced attributes, usually coming with decent Attack, Special Attack, and Defense stats, but below average Speed.

Offense
Additional effects
The Water type is also useful offensively, especially as powerful Water-type moves are plentiful. Almost all Water-type Pokémon can learn strong Ice moves to deal with Dragon and Grass types, which would make their resistance to Water-type attacks irrelevant. Water also has good coverage in conjunction with Dragon and Flying moves. It can be extremely useful to be super-effective against Fire, Ground, and Rock types. Also, double weaknesses to Water are fairly common, while there are only a few Pokémon that have a double resistance to Water.
During rain (introduced in Generation II) or Primordial Sea (introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire), the power of Water-type moves is increased by 50%. During harsh sunlight (introduced in Generation II), the power of Water-type moves is decreased by 50%. During Desolate Land (introduced in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire), all Water-type moves will fail.

During rain or heavy rain, the power of Water-type moves is increased by 50%. The power of Water-type moves is decreased by 50% during harsh sunlight, while the Water-type moves themselves will fail during extremely harsh sunlight.
The move Soak, introduced in Generation V, causes the target to become a pure Water-type Pokémon.

Contest properties
Water-type Pokémon are weak to the Ice move Freeze-Dry, introduced in Generation VI, despite normally being resistant to Ice-type moves.
In Contests, Water-type moves are typically Beautiful moves, but they can be from any other Contest type.

Pokémon
Pokémon
As of Generation VII, there are 133 Water-type Pokémon or 16.6% of all Pokémon (counting those that are Water-type in at least one of their forms), making it the most common of the eighteen types. All other types have been paired up with Water at least once - after the official release of Volcanion, Water became the second type to have this trait, after Flying.
As of Generation IX, Pokémon or % of all Pokémon are Water-type (counting those that are Water-type in at least one of their forms), making it the most common of the eighteen types among Pokémon, with Normal coming in second. After the introduction of Volcanion in Generation VI, all other types have been paired up with Water at least once, making it the second type to have this trait, after Flying and followed by Psychic.

The Pokémon below are listed by their current types. have had their types changed, usually when a new type was introduced.

Moves
As of Generation IX, there are 53 Water-type moves, which makes up 5.67% of all moves (excluding those that are Water-type only under certain circumstances), causing it to tie with Dark as the 5th most common type among moves, after Fighting and before Electric.
Prior to changes in Generation IV, all damaging Water-type moves were special, but they may now also be physical depending on the attack.

In the TCG
Water (TCG)
Due to the decreased amount of types in the TCG, Water generally adopts all Ice Pokémon under its typing.
Similar to the games, Water-type Pokémon in the TCG are generally weak to Grass and Lightning with no resistances. Water-type Pokémon are strong against Fighting and Fire Pokémon, whilst Grass Pokémon and some Colorless Pokémon can resist this type.

The Water type (Japanese: みずタイプ Water type) is one of the eighteen types. Water-type moves are super effective against Fire-, Ground-, and Rock-type Pokémon, while Water-type Pokémon are weak to Electric- and Grass-type moves.

Battle properties

Note: Type effectiveness multipliers may vary in other games outside the core series.

Additional effects

During rain (introduced in Generation II) or heavy rain (introduced in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire), the power of Water-type moves is increased by 50%. During harsh sunlight (introduced in Generation II), the power of Water-type moves is decreased by 50%. During extremely harsh sunlight (introduced in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire), all Water-type moves will fail.

The move Soak, introduced in Generation V, causes the target to become a pure Water-type Pokémon.

Water-type Pokémon are weak to the Ice-type move Freeze-Dry, introduced in Generation VI, despite normally being resistant to Ice-type moves.

Pokémon

As of Generation IX, 159 Pokémon or 15.51% of all Pokémon are Water-type (counting those that are Water-type in at least one of their forms), making it the most common of the eighteen types among Pokémon, with Normal coming in second. After the introduction of Volcanion in Generation VI, all other types have been paired up with Water at least once, making it the second type to have this trait, after Flying and followed by Psychic.

The Pokémon below are listed by their current types. Some Pokémon have had their types changed, usually when a new type was introduced.

In the TCG

Main article: Water (TCG)

Due to the decreased amount of types in the TCG, Water generally adopts all Ice-type Pokémon under its typing.

Similar to the games, Water-type Pokémon in the TCG are generally weak to Grass and Lightning with no resistances. Water-type Pokémon are strong against Fighting and Fire Pokémon, whilst Grass Pokémon and some Colorless Pokémon can resist this type.
